Recommend a very cheap and reliable SS brand to look at
Basically the Kias or Hyundais of bike-dom, that are cheap and cost-effective without delving into the supermarket extreme low end.
Looking to get one for my wife who can use it for transport and grocery shopping. Any recommendation for brands or should I just look for specific types?

Does your wife want a track bike to ride around in and haul groceries? I know my wife doesn't. I can already see the onslaught of incoming fecal matter from the ultra hipsters, but for her uses, something resembling the european bakfiets would be best. It looks maybe like something only your grandma would ride, but it's surprisingly quick and way comfortable. Hauling groceries and other items are a snap with the racks and other contraptions that are great for everyday riding. My wife's has a 7-speed IGH which works great as well. Singlespeed versions are fairly cheap at around $3-400 at just about any bike shop. Just another option to look at.
These bakfiets are super sturdy and more expensive (avg. is around $1k in the US. Not sure how much they go for in the Netherlands/EU).

The standard Kilo TT only comes with rear brake, and it only has clearance for tiny tires. The OP wants something practical for transport and grocery shopping.

Bring her to a bike store and see what she feels more comfortable on, especially if she will be riding with load. We all can tell you what works for us but we are not your wife so only she can tell. I wouldn't do an internet purchase on this one without trying bikes first.

we dont even know if his wife has experience riding bikes with tight geo and gobs of toe overlap.
how is kilo tt even a proper answer. besides kilo tt and grocery getter/transport dont really go together well.
it seems this forum is just a giant kilo tt bikesdirect schill now.
+1 on going to a bike shop dude, let her feel out what she likes. if she gets a chance to ride a bike that has tigheter geometry and likes it, get her sized and then buy online.
but your best bet is bike shop, she can feel things out, sit on them and possibly ride them. Let her decide.

true, it looks like it could be a really comfortable upright singlespeed commuter and WITHOUT TOE OVERLAP!
