Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Mayonnaise in today's Chicago Tribune!

Cool to bring in the Sunday Chicago Tribune and find Mayonnaise starring in an article about bike commuting at night. Today. 20 March. Front page of Transportation section with pictures and everything. My personal favorite was where they say he is checking out his tires, brakes and gears. Sure looks like a fixie w/ one brake to me! I think the pictures are only in the newspaper ... but the link has the article.

Mayo ... thanks for promoting the cause!

Yup... I saw it too. This thing's been in the works since November, actually... and there's a whole thread dedicated to it:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ht=night+rider

The pictures were cool, but I thought the article was a bit of a letdown. Kinda makes Mayo sound like a Safety Ranger, which upon reading the other thread, doesn't seem to be the direction he thought it'd be going...

Ya, article wasn't what I thought it would be. The pix were great. Mayonaisse looks like Tron in the color photo.

I see whacha mean ... the thread is much cooler than the newspaper article. I missed that thread. After I posted the head's up here (cuz I'm used to Mayo in SS) I thought to myself ... it's really more of a commuting pc. It might go into Safety and Advocacy except it doesn't talk about physically maiming cagers so it's a little mellow for them.

the article was nothing like I was expecting; they were decidedly mum when I asked for a preview. Turned out to be a low-fat mayonnaise, taking out all the good stuff: a lot of those quotes would have fit in but they didn’t use them. Made me sound like some kind of Altar Boy or something. Now I know what they mean by "family newspaper."
But, I don’t care. It was fun to do, particularly the pictures. I’ve got a cd with more than one hundred professional quality photographs. The boys in the school yard think it’s square and I’ll take a fair amount of teasing, but my Mom thinks it’s great, so there you go.

Before riding, check that the tires are inflated to the correct air pressure (as written on the sidewall) and make sure the bike is shifting gears and braking properly.
