The Wheeset of your budget constrained reality

If money is an object, what's the nicest wheelset you could put together for less than say $400. Something beyond your standard Velocity with Formula hubs.

Ditching the Velocity rims for starters. They had excellent quality when built in Australia, I've heard many a complaint since they shifted operations to the US.

Leukybear 04-02-14 06:07 PM

All-city sheriff star <=> DT swiss competition/ Sapim laser <=> H+S Archetype

EDIT: Forgot to mention for the penny pinchers that DT swiss comps come with nipples ;)

+1

I've sent back more than I've kept at this point.

Currently eyeing this with a Novatec road front.

I have All city track hubs - Spokes(who cares?) - H+son archetypes. Spin like buttah one year later, think they ran like 330(?) after labor and errthing.

Anything specific? It helps us to know. Since switching to our current US extruder, who has a long history in the world of bicycle rims, I can't say I've heard many complaints.

All City Sheriffs hubs to H+Son TB14s or Miche Primato low flange hubs to Araya SA30s.

Am I weird for liking Kinlin xr300s over archetypes?

On the internet, you are never alone.

Nope, in terms of aesthetics, I don't like the Archetypes myself either.

Since Scrod mentioned it in the other thread.. I am currently on the hunt for a track Chorus rear hub to lace into my Campy/Mavic MA wheelset..so I guess that's mine.

Not exactly sure you'll be able to build that for less than 4 bills.

Just need the rear hub itself actually.. I'm hoping to find a decent one for about 1 bill.

Specific problems? One wheel builder I spoke to here got some A23s with spoke holes that weren't drilled all the way through (might have the name wrong, but not the problem). Swarf inside the rim. Rough edges. Maybe QC has been cleaned up. Not finding out with my money though.

I'd probably get an All-City rear or a DA 7600 rear if I'm feeling fancy

budget wheels

27mm Kinlins and these...

Or Miche hubs with CXP33 or Ambrosio rims.

stilltooslow 04-07-14 08:38 PM

This pair cost me exactly $400:

Brand new pair of Paul Components track hubs snagged on Ebay for $145,
Velocity A23's (seems like a good set!) with DT comps for $255,
I built them, so no cost there.

Top notch set, very reasonable price.

nightfly 04-07-14 08:41 PM

What hubs are these?

i just brought home my ptap/d2 swiss 240 (front)/hed belgium set

i kinda wish I would've went TB-14s as these rims are kinda ugly but supposedly their good, we'll see. the wheels will get used on a brushed alu caad9 and a purple (think eggplant) steel frame so the hard ano look would've been fly

How are the Novatechs? Pretty similar to Formulas I assume? Looks like they also make a bolt on version that is sort of Phil Wood looking without the flange cutouts:
