Rear hub/axle play
Hi guys,
I've got a Dawes Mono and there is a small sideways play of the rear wheel. I think the hub/axle needs some work but there are a few things that I haven't answered: * Could this just be a matter of adjusting the lock nuts (the two nuts on each side that need the special spanners and lock each other)? * If I need to replace the bearings, do I need to take the axle out and does this mean I will have to also remove the spokes from the wheel? I don't know where to start troubleshooting. Is there a well known tutorial on this that people follow (like Sheldon Brown's tutorials)? |
It's not magic, and actually quite simple to adjust and overhaul cup-and-cone hubs. Just requires some inexpensive tools.

Spanners. If it binds, then it's time to check the axle isn't bent.

I know - I'm fairly mechanical but I've never done this so I'd like some starter advice. I do all my bicycle and motorcycle work and so far they've been OK :). |
