Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Flip flop while riding?

I was reading Sheldon Brown's primer on FG/SS. In it he suggests that you can ride the bike FG until you get tired and then flip to SS for the ride home. I'm just curious how many people actually do that. I know it's not a big deal to flip the wheel but you still have to get the wheel off and back on while trying not to get your hands full of grease from the chain. Anyone actually do this regularly?

And to ward off the comics, I realize that you'd actually STOP first and not flip the wheel "while riding."

Nothing wrong with that. You can also carry multiple bars and stems and switch from pursuit to time trial on the fly

I've never tried it nor thought about it. Its a nice option if you want to push your threshold and have the ability for a more relaxed ride on the way back.

Or just use your fifteen to lift the chain off the cog and onto the chainstay.

I almost never used my freewheel when I owned one. I would rather have gears if I can freewheel.

Sometimes I carry a few spare frames on my back for those times when I may want a change in geometry.

The only time I've ridden the freewheel is immediately after I installed it to see how it felt. I like having the option though, I imagine one day I'll end up flipping the wheel while on a ride.
