What am I looking for? Does it exist?

I posted this in the SS forum on MTBR, but want to ask you lot as well.

I am in the market for a new frame and fork to empty my parts bin onto. I will need a frame that can be easily single speeded and fixed, which means track ends, horizontal drops, ebb, sliders, or rockers. I want rim brakes and a 68mm BB. This leads me to more cross-ish frames. I am on the tall side so 60-62cm frames. I want minimum of 40mm tire clearance.

I had a Cross Check which fits all of those requirements but I wished for a taller headtube. I want to be able to get drop bars way up there.

Here's the kicker, I need it to be ~600$ or less and available through my LBS.

I've done my research thoroughly and believe that I have a good handle on the available frames that fit the bill, but I want to make sure that I'm not missing anything.

Thanks in advance.

The on one pompino frameset? I don't know if it's got a taller headtube but I think the frameset is like three hundred dollars.

Fyxation Quiver has a slightly taller headtube than the CC; but a Black Mountain Monstercross frame ticks all your boxes except for being available through your LBS.

Thanks folks.

The Quiver was on my list originally, but I think it is just going to be too small.

The Black Mountain Cycles is a super cool frame, but I can't get it through my LBS as far as I know. Otherwise, it would be way at the top of the list.

The Pompino is a super cool frame, but I can't get it through my LBS as far as I know. Am I wrong about that?

None of those frames in Soma's fixed gear page can handle tires bigger than 32 or so. I want minimum 40mm tire clearance.

Thus far it seems that the best bets are the following:
-Another Cross Check and run a bunch of spacers
-Fisticuff with a bunch of spacers
-All-City Space Horse
-Pake C'mute
-New Albion Privateer
-The upcoming Velo-Orange Carmague which is expected to be out soonish and depending on price

All of these have horizontal dropouts, come in a 60-62cm frame, have 68mm bottom brackets, canti posts, and clearance for at least 40mm tires.

There are subtle differences in geo for all of these but they are all in the same region of bikedom. I am right now leaning toward the All-City or the New Albion. The bike will see 98% road/city riding in the form of my commute with a touch of single track or dirt roads for fun, and hopefully a bunch of over-nighters. The All City has that ED coating which could be unnecessary, but is pretty cool for a bike that will see lots of weather of all sorts in Boston.

The Fisticuff is near the upper end of my price maximum, then in descending order, the Space Horse, Cross Check, New Albion and Pake are similar.

Any others I should add to the list?

Yeah. I did a quick scan. Figured it couldn't hurt, one way or another....

If you really want your drop bars way up there, and if your choices don't have tall enough headtube to fit your desire - you might consider using a dirt drop stem...

I would absolutely consider a dirt drop stem. Is such a thing available in the US at a reasonable price for 1 1/8" threadless steerers? I already have a few 35deg stems that I was planning on using.

The idea was that I would use one of those in lieu of a huge stack of spacers above the head tube. It's really just an aesthetic thing, since a big stack of spacers would do the same job.

You are right that its pretty much 6 of 1 or half dozen of the other - if you do care to pursue the possibility, Salsa & Voodoo come to my mind for 1-1/8" threadless dirt drop stem

Good luck and please post pics of your build when done...

I have a Pompino and love it, but there are a couple of reasons it may not fit your bill. The headtube is likely to be too short and I really doubt you'd be able to fit 40mm tires. It also has 120mm spacing, which is great if you have a track wheel set, but not if you wanted to repurpose a 130mm road wheel with spacers.

If I were you i'd check out the geo chart on the surly steamroller. It does come in a size 62 cm, just a suggestion if you liked the cross check. Mine fit's 38c tires easily. Another option would be the Kilo WT but that is out of stock and you can't order it through your bike shop.
