Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Article- Programmer turned Bike Courier

https://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2005/3/19/133129/548

" Once upon a time, I was a coder not unlike yourself. My day consisted of coffee, perl and java hacking, meetings, and e-mail. I had a cubicle with fluorescent lighting, my own bookshelf and two computers. And I traded it all in.

Even before Office Space, white collar workers peered out the window (if they were so lucky) and imagined a more romantic life doing real work out under the sun.

Well, having no children, no great career ambition and no financial obligations more pressing than a crippling student loan, a year and a half ago, I decided to live this dream.

I became a bicycle messenger and now I'm here to report back."

I read the original one on Kuro5hin and the comments are really funny. A bunch of programmers are calling dude a poseur because he didn't stick with programming. Never mind the fact that he does code, simply as a hobby for open-source projects.

"...the top three couriers at the company i ride for are: a forty-something ex-footballer from New Sealand who rides a Kronan cruiser, ..."

Now that I don't get at all. Why would a messenger ride a heavy piece of junk like that? (possibly off topic, just had to say it, i can't stand those bikes)

they do have some pretty heavy duty rack space for alot of deliveries and they seem to last forever (there has been one locked up outside near my house for over 3 years and theres no sign of chipping or rust on it). All that steel means strong, and they are pretty darn comfy. Definitely not speed machines though, but honestly how fast do you have to go to deliver packages?

chick, she

probably makes the decision even more ambitious, considering general courier demographics

I'm pretty sure the person who wrote that article is a guy, and that that picture just has a girl in it for some reason. I care not to elaborate any further.

okay, then i will.

1.) The header "A Boy's Got to Eat"
2.) In passing, the author slips in, "And yes, if you have even the slightest bit of charm, you will have plenty of opportunity to pick up hot receptionists."

[edit]even given the elaboration, i suppose a woman could have written it.[/edit]

i saw the pic and assumed it must have been a woman author too, until i read shiznaz's post, upon which time i went back and skimmed the article for clues.
