fixed newbie, troubleshooting lockring

fixed newbie, troubleshooting lockring
2 weeks ago I stumbled acrossed a 'left behind' baby blue panasonic sports deluxe. Already owning a 10 speed trek and knowing I wanted to try and ride fixed this summer, I pulled it apart.
Everything went as planed. Being strapped for cash lately and not knowing if I was going to stick with it, I went for cheap on the back wheel. Its a quando hub, no name rim, no name cog setup. I went to the bike shop after assembling it and got them to tighten the lockring down (i don't have a spanner; it will be changing very soon) and cog. I took it home afterwards, and put my bike together. Everything went great, except when I tried to back pedal really hard. When I stiffened my legs up to skid, the cog unthreaded. The lockring stopped it after about a half of crank arm rotation. I can tighten it again when I throw my feet forward, so I know that the quando hasn't stripped (as I was expecting).
What I am thinking is that the lockring, although tight, doesn't get all the way to the cog. Do you think that it would be wise to put a large sort of washer between the cog and the hub, that way the lockring hits the cog? Does anyone know where to get something like this? Has anyone else shared my problem?

sounds like that could work....or you could drop some money on different cog/lockring.....the dura ace cogs in particular have a wider thread so it takes up more room on the hub getting really snug w/the lock ring

I'll try that today.
Anyone know a good place in philly that will sell me a spanner/lockring wrench? I'm also just looking for a good place in general, the guys at the shop around here could have cared less what I was doing with my bike. Infact, upon further inspection, it looks as if they might have greased my cog and lockring.

Always grease your cog and lockring. It allows you to properly seat the threads and prevents the two metal surfaces from corroding together so that you can get them off in the future.
The rule of thumb is that just about every metal-to-metal contact should be greased. Chains should be lubed and...uh...that's all I can think of off-hand. Oh, and you don't need to grease the stem-to-bar interface typically.
