This is gonna sound slightly crazy but the "concert" was at the library lobby at the Evergreen State College (Olympia, Wa.) winter 73-74 as I recall. I doubt there were 300? there & tickets were maybe $5 but I had a college friend who was in the TV production classes and he got snagged as "security" which means I got in for free. Was a great concert but more on the scale of a club show which made it special. I'm a Brubeck fan. Corea was my first exposure to fusion jazz and I never forgot that show.

I saw The White Stripes in little ****ty bars in Detroit when I was in my 20s. Back then the kids called themselves "mods" or whatever.

You know, back when Karl von Drais showed me his first Laufmaschine back in the summer of 1817, I took the stein of homebrew his manservant offered me and said: You do realise that people are going to accuse you of being a hipster?

He didn't seem to think it would be an issue until some idiot fitted pedals.

Now that I've also revealed how ancient I am, I can chime in that Jefferson Airplane was my 1st concert too - late '67 in Cincinnati, which is where Marty Balin was born, so we all were excited to think of it as his "homecoming". Cannot remember a bit of it

I was just a bit too young to be a hippy. I went to Anti Viet Nam War Protests with my mom! The first rock concert I went to was Frank Zappa in St. Paul in 1974! A few years later I passed Prince driving on Lake Street in Minneapolis and didn't care.

Last year I pulled up to a stoplight and a younger gentleman I will refer to as "the ultimate hipster" or UH pulled up to the light perpendicular to me hop-skidding and then went into a trackstand. As soon as he was stable in his trackstand UH reached up to his mouth and grabbed his cigarette, took one more puff and flicked it away with his thumb and forefinger while in said trackstand. UH waited for the traffic to clear and made his left hand turn and pedaled away. I felt like shouting out "Bravo!". It was an impressive performance!

Hipster? No? Who cares. It's all good. I follow the teachings of the great philosopher Popeye the Sailor Man. Iyam what iyam!

There are many sub-types of the hipster archetype. Sounds like this breed of UH was the crusty type.

the term hipster is grossly misused.

if having bicycles*, eating quinoa, driving a volkswagen, using apple products, collecting vinyl LPs, enjoying espresso and small batch beers, having an opinion without constantly sharing it, wearing comfortable clothing that fits and being over stuff makes you a hipster, then sign me the eff up because that sounds great.

*last time i checked fixay bikes are out. flatbar vintage roadies were in and and so were legit cx bikes but racing is hard so now they are out and touring bikes are in because you can put vegan bags on them. MTB tech is soaring right now so vintage 26" rigid MTBs should be up next. quickly get on your local CL and scoop all the kooka, ringle and syncros stuff you can find.

I've got a honda and a samsung, both of which I'm happy with.
But sign me up for the rest.

Using apple products doesn't make you a hipster, it just means you like overpaying for inferior technology.

Since the term "fixed" is associated with neutering, it is so right that hipsters ride fixed. This likely explains why they've peaked and are in slow decline (fixing will do that too).

My first concert was lollapalooza(sp?) in 97 I think. Tool, prodigy and I think Jane's addiction. Me and my mom went, mostly because I was eleven. First unattended concert might have been get up kids or Jimmy eat world/braid. #emoforlife

My first concert was the backstreet boys, I win.

But beside that riding a fixed gear is not hipster .... exept if ...
  • You have cards in your spoke only for the style for no reason.
  • You ride single speed 1 brake but you try to fake it by keeping pedaling when you slow down. ( I saw it bro )
  • You ride fixed brakeless with a fork that can accept a brake for the only ultimate reason to keep it real, #Idontbrake
  • You invested $1500 on a wheel set but you have garbage crank, garbage frame, garbage .... you see the point.
  • You bought all the fixie accesories, the cap, the messenger bag, .... just to go drink a beer.
  • You wheel of frame is sticker bombed with Starbucks stickers.
  • You talk about your fixed gear in the first 5 minute when you meet somebody new.
  • You literally always over instagram pose with a crazy track stand at the red light in the middle of the 3 lane streets to show off your amazing skills to pedestrian and that chick over there who don't give a ****.

Riding a fixed gear is not hipster if
  • Your gear is actually fixed.
  • Your bike is balanced in investment ( aka not a wall mart frame with mavic wheels. )
  • You know how to ride it and can explain why you have fun doing it.
  • Your far from a mechanic but you made the effort to not sound too dumb at the local bike shop.

So in my mind it's easy to have an hipster attitude on a fixed gear, just like with any trendy fashion gadget.

Hipster is matching old and new technologies in a fashion way to create your own new kind of lifestyle. An easy example would be this one.

Now imagine if this dude go around the corner and unlock is fixed gear with cards spoke on the back and a pink aeroskope on the front all mounted on a purefix frame. We could yell at him ....

So fixed gear bike are used by hipster as a tool to match their other fashion accessorizes. They use the fixed side of biking as the retro true source of bicycling and they match it with their piece of **** attitude of a full carbon $400 wheels to make a contradiction statement.

So in conclusion, riding a fixed gear bike is not hipster, you are the hipster on a fixed gear ... except if you dress your bike in a hipster way of if you look like the queen of Manhattan on it.

I will end this with a pic that show you how hipster use fixed gear bike as a fashion accessories.

No I was in Michigan at the time. It was the Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness tour. I had to be 16 because the album came out Oct'95 and the tour was the following summer (hey, I found the setlist!) - it was their opening show for that tour and they played Saginaw, MI which I believe D'arcy used to live near. Garbage was the opener and I remember the crowd booing them like crazy.
