Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

All City BigBlock vs. Wabi Special (mainly frames)

So I finally got my big job i wanted, and can finally afford to start a very nice quality build. Orrr just buy a full bike.

So my budget has relaxed a bit, and id like to keep it under $1000.

In my research I first fixated on the Big Block.
And now i'm leaning towards Wabi.

I have not seen both in person nor have I rode them.

I currently ride a 10sp I built myself, with a cheap nashbar alu frame, zeuss carbon fork, 105 gearing and high end wheels. chines shifters (that are actually amazing! and cheap)

Ive had a Kilo TT in the past, but at the time due to financial constraints had to sell it. Wanted to get back on a fixed gear ever since.

So i want to build another.

BigBlock or Wabi? I'd even be more interested in the Wabi classic for the savings. And if i wanted a lugged fork like the Special has, i could always get one. Or even get a full carbon one.

I like how the Wabi's steel materials are higher quality thatn All City's, and is lighter. But maybe its marketing, maybe not, i for some reason feel the Big Block is built better, adn is stronger? I dont know..

So i ask the people who have experience with both.

Which one is the better buy?

Also the sizing for the All City worries me, now that i think of it. The 52 has a standover of 796, and the next size up the 55 is 821. My inseam is about 32, so thats a hair under the 55. that might be too big? but he 52 is wayyyy too small.

Stand over isn't important, top tube length is.. Please use a fit calculator in the sticky.

I was stuck between those two frames recently as well. I ended up choosing the wabi primarily due to color. I'm not a big fan of the silver/white on the current model big block. Also, sizing seemed closer for me know the wabi.

Yea but theres also the gold, and that one looks great. I too am not sure im feeling the white into silver. They change colors every year.

Hows the wabi? DId you buy the complete build? or just the frame

I heard there will be a blue released later in the year. I'm between these frames with the inclusion of the soma rush. I'm leaning toward the BB

I actually just took it for its first ride yesterday. I bought just the frame and built it up. I am very pleased with the quality of the wabi frame. Its well built.

I am still dialing in the stem/bars.

There is a pic here So I am building a new bike, help with frame choice please? and ill update it once its all finished.

What about the difference between the walk classic and special? Are the lugs that much better?

I think the special is more strong and beautiful than classic, because it has lug.

I don't know why the lug frame is "stronger" than the TIG frame. I think the lug frame is better looking. In theory the lug frame is repairable-heat up the lug, install a new tube and repaint but as cheap as these bikes are it would be better to buy a new frame. I don't think you will find any practical difference between the TIG and lug frames. The Classic will take wider tires and has eyelets for fenders and rear rack. The Special looks better and more "classic" to me.

The geometry of the Big Block is totally different than the Wabi. Big Block is track legal and has a higher bottom bracket. The Wabi has a more relaxed road geo.
Both bikes are great .
Enjoy.

i thin im gonna go with the classic full build in black (wish he had orange option) and upgrade over time. might do it in a couple of pay checks. the lugs on the classic look nice but i dont want to spend thatnmuch more.

also wish he had silver rims option. not a fan pf black with machined silver brale line look.
