Your favorite grips for riser bars?

I like the Odyssey Aaron Ross. But I kinda hate that it says "Aaron Ross."

The curved arch is great on your plam. Kraton rubber. Soft yet firm.

Are the Vans comfy? They look like conceptual art.

They actually really are IMO. I felt like they took a little while to break in (about a week or so) but once broken in, super comfy and a lot of grip. I have them on my FGFS and my Pista.

Cool. They look like they would dig into your palms, and not provide a lot of cush against vibration. But if it works, it works.

I've got a set of Oury grips on my Masi. I like the grips a lot. I'm switching to bullhorns shortly (with bar tape), but as far as riser grips go, these Oury are my favs.

I will say that installation was a chore. I did the hairspray thing, but one of the grips never did set correctly. I found that cleaning the bar really, really well and then spraying the actual bar itself with a thin, even coating of hairspray gave the best "lock" for the grips (as opposed to spraying inside the grip). Once they lock down, though, they're a bear to get off.

I go up and down on the Oury's. I'm not the biggest dude, so sometimes they feel too big in my hands. But the design and the cush are tops.

Hairspray is an old trick, but it can be messy. I used to work at a shop, and sometimes we would use either the air compressor or a syringe with rubbing alcohol to get the grips on or off.

I tried the Alcohol thing and couldn't get 'em to dry out and stick (admittedly, I probably used too much) and I didn't have a compressor handy to try that trick, but I saw online that a kid used like 4 of those zip tie things (with the pointy end inside the grip. He pulled the grips on with the zip ties spread out evenly at 12, 3, 6, 9 and once the grip was on, he used pliers to grab the ends of the zip ties and pull them out. Hairspray worked well for me, but I'd probably try the zip tie thing next time.

Weird. I can see how that would work. The problem with hairspray is that if the grips get too hot, it can warm up the "glue," and then your grips are sliding around. I find alcohol works pretty well. But you don't need a lot.

I'm not a big fan of the oury grips. Maybe because I'm just not a fan of riser bars. I had riser bars with oury grips then switched to horns and never looked back

Not trying to derail, but have you thought of bar tape?

I had grips on riser bars but they were cheap and uncomfortable. Pulled them off and wrapped the whole bar in some nice Fizik tape.

Thought it looked better, was more comfortable and gave me more hand positions. Just IMHO (which isn't worth much).

/Continue thread.

Edit: Also switched to bullhorns and never looked back. ^

Bar shape has a lot to do with the kind of riding you do. I find risers work well for riding in the city.

Yoshida champ grips

Super tacky, supple, and the best part, don't get nasty like ourys and cheaper alternatives do over time as the oil in your skin degrades the material.

Sand the bar to make it fairly rough in the grip area. Lightly Windex the inside of grip and shake out all excess. The grip slides on effortlessly and as the Windex dries the amonia acts like a glue. That method works on grips that are too tight to get on wothout lube. If the grip is big enough to get on without lube, then the only thing that has worked for me is grip specific glue, like Renthal's. Easy to use, no mess, bolted on forever.

i used water activated grip tape for golf club grips for my oury grips. simple as pie, gives you a little time to slide them around into the position you want and then on there like like they were forged onto the bars. i don't think there is an easier or more secure way to do it

Yep, and on a humble Kilo. Bars and tires are the only upgrades on that bike, almost as sweet to ride and getting as many compliments as my Big Block.

Ive got some Somas on the way that I had planned to use bar tape on but I'm thinking I like the Origin grips instead. Thanks for the idea. I might be stealing it.
