Looking to get a cheap fixie.
I'm assuming everyone has seen this before, a newbie asking for some advice on what kind of bike to get. Well I'm here to say, I'm absolutely no different. I'm interested in purchasing a fixie, and I have no idea what I'm looking for. My hope is to spend under $250, and I'm not willing to go over $300.
The most common bike brand I'm seeing in my area is purefix, which is over my budget. A friend of mine, who's on occasion allowed me to ride his bike, has a 6KU Nebula for $200~. I'm personally looking at a Vilano fixed gear bike - Amazon.com : Vilano Fixed Gear Bike Fixie Single Speed Road Bike : Fixed Gear Bicycles : Sports & Outdoors But the brand seems to get a lot of mixed reviews, with some saying it's great, and others saying how bad it is. I'm personally a big fan of drop bars, even if they are overrated. Other then that, I'm really just looking for some more options, and perhaps some personal experiences some of you guys have had with your first fixie.
Sorry if I seem like your generic newbie, but what can I say? I'm interested in some extra opinions.

He's telling you to get a Kilo TT from BikesDirect.com, but the Kilo is over your budget. They do have some Dawes and a few others in your price range. I've never ordered from them, but most people on this forum seem to swear by them. Hope that helps.

Look for something used on craigslist, and make sure it fits you. Nothing that sells for less than $300 new is worth your time or money.

I had a Windsor Hour for a little while. It's a decent frame. The components aren't really good or bad. Overall, I was pretty happy with it. The one thing I like to look for in a frame is whether or not it has cable-stays brazed on (ie, permanently attached). I think it looks ugly to have a frame with no rear brake and empty cable stays. If you're going to run both front and rear brakes, it won't matter, but if you ever think you'll switch to a front only (or no brake at all), get something with removable cable-stays.
Actually, this is probably right up your alley... No cable stays, drops, under $300: Save Up to 60% Off Motobecane Singlespeed Bikes - 2012 Track Bicycles by Motobecane USA up to 60% Off

I bought a slightly used Pure Fix for 160..am approaching 2000 miles on it,,no problems cept tires. Tires go flat sooner or later cause the rim liner is insufficient to cover spoke holes. An easy fix.
I have seen many different ones on craigslist with less than a hundred miles on them. Big Shot, State, Pure fix and others. Many times people buy them and arent happy riding fix. You can find them no problem almost new. I also have a SE Lager , comes in 2 colors the black ones didnt sell as well as the red, I have seen them on sale for 276.00. Se Lager is sold as a commuter, has all the reflectors, 2 brakes and a chainguard. If you can find one for 276 I would scoop it up.
