Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? WHat gear ratio?

Howdy,

I'm building up a fixed gear, and I can't decide on the gear ratio. I've never ridden fixed before (this bike is for a friend, who wants it so he can pick up punkrock chicks ), and I'm not sure what a good ratio is for one unaccustomed to non-coasting bicycles. I'm leaning toward a 39x13 (78 gear inches), but I may drop as far down as 32x13 to match the bike with 4-bolt mtb crankset.

I'm in Philly--some hills, but nothing too serious. What do people advise?

i am in philly and I ride a 48/17 and its fine. Ride what you are comfortable with.... do a search on the forums on Gear Ratio, this has been discussed millions of times. We really dont have hills here, but if you are in center city you will have a lot of stop and go traffic, so you will probably want something in the 70's so you can stop or skid as needed with ease.

when you get it built up come out for the Pretzel rides every tuesday.

see you there.

Find a bike with gears and mess around with it til u find a ratio u like then get the same ratio on your bike.

78 is pretty big, i think spinning a lower gear is better and i spin a much lower one-- around a 42:16

Try a 39x17t (63") to begin with. I started with a 42x18 (63") and learned how to spin,
before moving higher.

Why such small chainrings? 42 x 16 is the all around beginner gear.

I started and stayed with 46x15 in Philly, with no problem. Although I might step it down for stopping easier in traffic....

42/18 here too, spinners represent.

I might be winning a few 53/54 chainrings soon, I don't know what I'll do with them, except wear them on a necklace and replace the leg press machine during summer. Only time will tell.
