Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Locked Axle

So I have been riding Singlespeed for only about a month and tonight I flipped the wheel to fixed to test it out. Everything was going fine until I stood up to power through a yellow light, then my rear axle locked up. No rotation either way. I went to take the wheel off and flip it and as soon as i loosened the cog side axle nut, it broke free again. It rode fine the rest of the way. What did I do wrong??

Tighten those axle nuts. Put some muscle into it.

Obviously you have too much power for your bike. Treat it like a friend.

I'm betting you didn't have the drive side axle nut tight enough and as soon as you whacked on some power, the wheel pulled crooked in the frame and the tyre jammed against the frame, hence no go. As soon as you loosened that drive side nut, the wheel sprung back to square whereupon you tightened everything up to ride on, not having noticed the skewed wheel.
Of course, I'm only guessing ... based on the evidence presented and past incompetence

Your cog is slipping.

Dude, you're Ultra Man. Everything obviously operates on a different plane of reality for you. We have no realistic way of answering your questions.

What Europa said, you probably pulled your wheel. Make sure your axle nuts are properly tightened.

And that you have washers between the axle nuts and ends/dropouts. That's a noob mistake I made a few years back, after a few pulled wheels I wised up and got the captive-washer style axle nuts for that bike.

Thanks guys. I can see now where the wheel bit into the frame, so the axle definitely came loose.

It's something that's so common among rookies it's almost a cliche
