    Show your road frame conversions

Hey guys, would like to see your lightweight road frames you have converted to either SS or FG. Please post weight, size and build spec if you have it handy.

    Gitane updated.jpg

My only current conversion - c.1971 Gitane Tour de France, 60cm c-t, metric-gauge Reynolds 531 throughout, Prugnat lugs, Nervex fork crown, Simplex ends; Kogswell sealed-bearing hubs laced to Mavic MA-3 rims, currently on 28mm Paselas but pictured on Continental 25mm tires; Stronglight 93 cranks (currently on a vintage Phil Wood BB), MKS Sylvan track pedals w/ Christophe clips and ALE straps, geared 45x17; Stronglight headset with a Zeus locknut; Nitto bars and stem, old Dia-Compe levers operating c.1974 Weinmann 500 sidepulls with Matthauser pads; blue Tressostar with multiple layers of shellac; c.2000 Brooks B.17 with road rash scars from a long ago crash fitted to a vintage 26.4mm SR Laprade seatpost; pictured with budget-el cheapo LED headlamp and tail lamp in "Dawn Patrol" mode for pre-work morning rides.

Dunno weight, but it feels light, maybe 22 or so lbs., not shabby for a bike with a steel-railed Brooks!

Started with a $40 Free Spirit. and for an additional $200 and some odd dollars later I was able to put on a new rear wheel, shimano freewheel, new set of tires, new chain, rim tape, tubes and a new chain ring. Oh, and I also wasted $30 on a Peugot frame that turned out to be bent.

Here is what I have so far. Don't ask why but I am trying to figure out if I am going to like single speed before I buy. I was going to just put my bike in one gear, but then I thought well what would be the fun in that, so I ordered a conversion kit. So far the only thing to show up is the chain tensioner. Still waiting on the cog, brake levers, and some spacers. Here is what used to be a very nice 17lb road bike all stripped down waiting for parts.

Sheldon Brown wrote this about riding his singlespeed: Singlespeed Bicycle Conversions

That will be a sweet ride once you get it finished.
