Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Looks like you got a good deal there. Pake is very good quality, and the other components look decent as well. Apparently you were the only bidder, so you didn't have to pay more than the starting bid.

Thanks! Only thing I'm worried about is the wheelset, but it'll be a good first FG/SS bike. Guy says it was about a 56cm bike, which makes me think it's the 55cm frameset. I'm pretty pumped, it's getting shipped on Monday. And I spent less than I would have spent converting my old Motobecane Super Mirage (Which I didn't want to do anyway, as it's pretty nice to ride geared). I'll post pictures when it arrives!

I don't see anything really wrong about the wheelset. It looks a lot like the wheelset that came on my Windsor Clockwork, Formula hubs, Alex rims and 14gage ss spokes. Solid stuff and not real heavy, because they don't have stupid colored deep V's. You will probably have to adjust the wheel bearings and true the rims, but I assume you know that.

I'll probably have to take it to my LBS for that, I know how to true rims in theory, I just haven't really done it in practice. I'm fairly new to bike repair and maintenance. I'm also going to look at putting a front brake on it, as I intend to ride fixed...and I like being able to stop with more than just my legs.

This bike doesn't see the street and I'm a fairly competitive Cat2, so I hope this doesn't qualify for jackassery (nor this explanation ).

To be honest, this chainring was bought as a sort-of gag, because its ridiculous and any gear change in the rear is so much more drastic. I'll probably pick up a 50t or 51t soon.

Heheh slow acceleration but I'm sure you can easily make up. How fast is that at 120 rpm if you can even spin it that hard?

Calculator says ~35mph. I don't ride with a computer/power meter, but both of my tracks here are reasonably smooth and fast. I would be surprised if we didn't hit that every race.

35mph on the flats? 'cause I hit like 28.5mph ~ish on my wabi SS (20lbs @ 48x16) on the bike paths pumping the quads... blowing by kids like they got their feet stuck in concrete.

Downhills don't count.

My new project. It's very nice to just call the manufacturer when parts are needed.

I have a son with Autism who can ride the wheels off a bike anchored to a trainer, but can't balance. It's for him (that's what I told my wife, anyway). Post-resto pics in a while.

To fully enjoy that bike, you should listen to an ABBA greatest hits compilation while riding it.

I've hit 35 on flats with that gearing(48x16). Spin to win. Also, a tailwind helps.

I have hit 32 on the flats on a 16.8 lb Felt rolling 49:15, passing cars like they were in park.

I'm seriously curious. My bikes wont allow speeds like that because of their turtle ratios, so I imagine there is some grunting to generate those numbers. How long can you guys maintain ~ 30mph on flat windless conditions?

Last year I set a goal of breaking a 2 minute marked mile on a flat trail and succeeded on 48x16.
