Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Budget $300 or under

Looking for a bike that's under $300

How is this bike from bikesdirect??
If it's not good, can you recommend me a good one?
I want a single speed or fixed gear with rear/front brakes and decent tires to go on trails and gravel as well as road

Probably about as good as anything else at that pricepoint. BD has a couple of their older models at a heavy discount, though severely limited sizing, so you might want to check those and see if there's anything that fits you. Otherwise, the only way you'll do much better for $300 is by being patient on the used market. $300 is pretty much the top of the bottom of the barrel for new bikes.

$15 for fixed cog. BAM! You have fifty more dollars to get some hipster clothes at the thrift store! ;-) Or, ten pints of ironic IPA, if you don't tip. :-D

EDIT, JUST REALIZED OP DOESN'T ACTUALLY NEED FIXED COG. THREE MORE PINTS AVAILABLE. Caps Lock broke.

Why did you start another thread? Do you think we all forgot that you just asked this question and got that bike suggestion as a response?

There's nothing really great for $300, you should check craigslist or save up a little bit more money and buy a Kilo WT with some wider tires. That would serve very well on the road plus some light off roading with some 32-35mm tires. Always better to spend a little more and get something with some lasting appeal if you're actually going to ride the bike a lot.

Indeed, should search or read some sticky's before asking this, esp at this price range. Not many options, can't expect much out of any bike that's under $300, questions been asked and answered a thousand times.

This community / forum sucks.
I'm new to bikes, I just want a bike that doesn't break the bank and can be somewhat reliable.

I'm not like you guys who spend money on a bike that costs the same as a car..

You judge someone who wants to buy a bike that they believe is quite pricey at $300-$500 which is a lot of money for a bike.
You bike riders spend thousands and think $300-$500 is chump change for a bike...lol
It's rubber tires on a frame, shouldn't cost as much as a car

You got judged by the number of threads you started asking the same question without doing any research, not by your budget.

Yeah, folks can be a bit elitist and smart ass around here, but there is some good stuff too.

The Dawes SST (Steel) linked above isn't bad. I would imagine the Moto you are looking at to be of similar quality. I purchased one of the Dawes a while back and had to put a few more bucks in to make it ridable and got it the way I liked for under $450. I ride it a LOT (more than any of my others now) and aside from routine stuff it hasn't needed a thing. I like it, it fit the bill well.

While I'm just here for the dogpile, this is actually good information.

i've never known anyone who cares about cycling to purchase any of these BD.com cheapies. My GF seriously needs something lighter, and flips out when I start looking for Serottas and carbon Treks or Specialized for her. She doesn't want me or her to spend a lot, so it is conflict avoidance to spend as little as possible.

My personal thought is that BD gets a bad rap. I say this based on a couple of things. You can go as nice or as CHEAP as you want to go there. Then, when you get it you can choose to be cheap and assemble it yourself or take it to a shop and let a pro do it....assuming you don't know what you are doing, and don't have some things fixed like truing and grease for the bearings (not different from big name bikes out of the box either) then the buyer has a bad experience and cries about it everywhere. I have so far purchased three bikes from there, all under $500 and each and every one was well more than worth it compared to what I would have paid for the exact same bike minus a brand name on the downtube at a bike shop.

With all that said...my nice road bike is a Specialized I purchased new from a shop....so....
