Kind of late on this, but if the Suzue hubs aren't toast, I'd probably find some nice rims and build up a whole new set of wheels. You'll need different spokes anyway, right?

Fresh Garbage
IDK why I wrote Suzue, mind fart I guess. Old school high flange Sansin hubs. I want to rebuilt because the front is cartridge bearing and the rear is loose ball bearing. Minor issues with the front - axle doesn't have shoulders on the inside to support the bearing race, makes messing with the adjustment a pain and I can't get a shouldered axle for it. The rear is fine since I put it in a Wheel Manufaturer's axle(which is totally straight) but the replacement cones are a weee bit smaller in OD so dirt can get in more easily, nevermind that the hub doesn't have much for a seal other than a metal dust cap. Plus I have these two Phils just sitting around waiting to go on a Paramount. I don't have time to do it now anyway, so whatever.

Also, I think a silver stem and seatpost would look better as well.

Should I buy an old specialized mtb (1980's) for commuting? Dude is the original owner.
Also, how the hell do I fit myself to one of those. It's a 21.5", which I think I'd fit, but honestly have no idea how to size myself.

oldschool mtbs are generally speaking sized very simular to roadies, just a short ST. try and get a TT measurement and ignore the seatpost measurements. mtbs usually have a 90mm or less stem with lots of rise so itl probably have a longer TT to make up the difference in reach.
that being said most old steel mtbs make fantastical drop bar conversions for "do whatever the **** you want" bikes and are a lot of fun
fyi: 21.5" = 54cm but im sure you knew how to do conversions already (im in a good mood)

Ok cool. This will be a dick around/leave on campus/out drinking kind of bike so it doesn't need to be absolutely perfect or anything
Also $300 seems like a lot for a stumpjumper comp, even if it only has had one owner and is in perfect aesthetic shape. Can someone confirm this for me before I go into negotiations?

I'm kinda looking at getting an iPod shuffle or something so I can have music as I ride. My phone battery isn't doing too hot if I stream spotify for extended periods of time, even if I have it in offline mode, and only using the music I have saved offline. Anyone have any other recommendations?

Dang, you just missed a Black '80s Stumpjumper on Portland CL for $60 or $80, super cheap. Kinda rough and a couple of wack parts but still a good deal. Musta been Wednesday or Thursday.
$300 isn't outrageous, it's a bargain for some years if mostly original.

Looks to be mostly original, except for the adjustable stem which would obviously be changed pronto. And I guess I'd probably make it a 1x since I hate dealing with shifters. Hopefully the dude gets back to me, but it sounds like there's plenty of these hopping around the Portland CL.

That extender is pretty easy to take out if you have allen bits for a socket wrench. If not you can put a long L-shaped allen wrench in there and use a big Crescent wrench to turn it with the short end. the extender acts just like a quill stem - bolt and expander wedge.

That Stumpy is a good deal. If was in my town and in as good shape as the pics make it look - I'd have already bought it. Sold my '86 I'd owned for 20+ years that had a unicrown fork & much more "patina" on the frame, but was mechanically perfect, for $425 not too long ago and been missing it. It would be silly to strip original bits off that bike, just leave it original and don't shift if you don't want to.
Good luck...

Oh, the one with that big stem extender? Kinda meh deal, I guess. Not a great deal, but not total ripoff.

I'd be tempted to pay $300, just cuz I'm a sucker for lugged MTBs and Spec only did lugs for a couple of years. I think that's one of the ones with the lugged unicrown fork, too.
Shame about no original seatpost or stem.
It's been up for 21 days, and expires within 24 hours, so you might wanna email 'em in case they don't repost. Maybe they'll take a semi-lowball on it.

Thanks for bringing my attention to that black one, though. I love me a biplane fork. Might be a bit small for me, we'll see if the owner emails back with some measurements. That stem extension is pretty crazy too lol

I did trigger on my IGH townie, and it's effortless. Don't have to move my hand position at all.
