The rusty old POS's I've removed in the past with a standard combo wrench have been stuck-on with more than 55. The right tool for the job, but c'mon!

Hmm, I'd expect a much longer life from a modern, cartridge BB than this, and the bloody thing's not rebuildable. Is this part the much lauded advantages of modern kit?
...
The crank arms felt good. Crank spun freely.
I pulled the crankarms - they had been installed dry as they should be but I cleaned everything up as well as I could.
Chainring bolts were tight.
The bottom bracket felt good. It was snugged up very tight and so I didn't try too hard to remove it. The Miche BB is adjustable so I'm guessing the only way to hold it in the right place is to pull it up tight. It was last adjusted by a mechanic I trust so I'm accepting it as correct for the moment.

I install pedals w/ a pedal wrench, we were taught to use the proper tool for the task at the Chicago Schwinn factory's mechanic's certification course "back when".
I have both traditional 15mm and 8mm allen pedal wrenches and use either as required.

Glad to see someone's still on the topic. Thanks. I'll bear it in mind. My biggest concern at the moment is the chainring, you expect wear but I haven't seen this sort of thing before.

it all makes sense now. you can't use a hex wrench on those old 1/2" spindles...
on the topic at hand; clean everything - I recently was experiencing almost exactly the same thing on my kilo. checked the usual suspects, pedals, cranks, BB, tightened them all and it still creaked on the left side. it wasn't until I cleaned the threads on the BB cartridge and the shell itself that the creak went away

Cleanliness is indeed your friend. I should have a bottle of Shellite here somewhere but do you reckon I could find it? I don't know if you have the stuff (it might be a brand name) but it's a clear, hydrocarbon based liquid that evaporates like blazes but gets oily stuff as clean as Mum's dishes. Naturally, things need oiling after that.
In the old days, I always used kerosene for cleaning, particularly car parts, because it took off the grease and muck but left an oily film. Now that it's not used as a fuel, you can only get some imitation muck with a blue die in it that stinks worse than real kero with a stink that lasts for days and cleans nothing off. I switched to diesel fuel for cleaning car components. The bike, I just get it dead clean then lubricate what needs it.
Good tip on cleaning everything properly though. Will get another bottle of Shellite and do that if it looks like I'll be pulling the BB. Yes yes, I'm putting off the inevitable. Procrastination is 9/10ths of amateur bike mechanics ... which is why the professionals get to stay in business, by fixing what we should have fixed ages ago. Actually, I'm now feeling a little guilty that I didn't do the whole job properly on the weekend because I like to keep my bikes well maintained. I think the BB put me off, it's really snugged down tight.

Dead silent today so I've done something right. Mind you, I did use a lot of lube, as that wears off over the next few days (as wax does), we'll find out if that's the issue or it was something else.
