I believe portions of rte 1 are closed to cyclists and I would guess that the rest won't be any fun. You could take a look at the Rubel's South Shore map and see if you can mark out a different route.

i really dont have money for cycling maps, hence riding to providence instead of taking the train.

theres no fixed friday thing. im not working again until next week, need to go to providence this weekend anyway and figure i might as well ride since im bored.

Rt 1 is a lousy cycling road in a few places. I ride in the area you are talking about and live right next to Providence. What area of Prov. do you want to end up in? rt 152 down from Attleboro is better and brings you right next to the east side of Providence. I may be going the opposite way on Friday. Try msn maps for 126, I was riding on it Saturday. Parts of 138 are narrow and with some big potholes too.

edit post: 126 is actually "RT 123" this map will show 138 to 123 to 152 towards Providence.

I did that riding route 1 once, it's not scenic, some parts are three lanes, some of the hill climbs you'll have 18 wheelers storming past real close

cool, this is what i was looking for. ill probably end up taking this route. i will eventually be heading to the west side of providence (i think west. broadway/westminster/olneyville area). depending on how long it takes i might have time to kill and will just end up bumming around downtown. thanks agian

152 Won't be too bad into PVD. I see cyclists on it all the time when I am back at my parents. 123 will be about the same. There are some short cuts through there that will cut a few miles if you want to get there the quickest way possible. You can probably figure out on google maps or something like that. That used to be my everyday drive to high school.

Is 138 kosher then or no? I'm riding from Milton, so thats no problem for me. The only thing is that the 138, 123, 152 route looks about 30% longer than route 1, so shortcuts that you could provide which wont be too difficult to navigate would be appreciated. Does anyone know a reasonable riding time that I should plan for? Also, is the ride at all enjoyable?

Well, it's Friday night now, so it may be too late.

But, I measured the mileage from Brigham & Woman’s hospital to my driveway in East Providence (Riverside, the farthest part from Boston) with the car. It's only 55 miles.

To the west side of Providence may be about the same or a mile or two longer. More west but not as far south.

I went down Jamaica way to 138 to 123 to 152 into East Providence. You would have to go across Providence to get to the west side. It's a nice route from Boston if you don't mind riding in, or next to traffic. I'm riding up and back on Saturday. I have already ridden over half of the route before. I like it. Most of the way is nice. Part of it is narrow and has some potholes.

Skip route 1 if you can. Route 1A is better, but not as nice as this route. This is a lot less city and more rural.

I rode from East Providence to Boston and back today (Saturday). Most of 138 is very good, most of 152 is pretty good. There are a few places on 126 that have so many potholes and patches on top of patches that you almost have to stop. Keep your eyes open all the time if you have 700x23 tires. Lots of nice scenery.

It was about 43 miles to the Milton town line and about 47 to the Boston town line.

I took some pix of the ride.
