If that is the case, then why don't you constantly drop the chain on a geared road bike when running on the largest and smallest freewheel cogs ? The main purpose of shift ramps is to facilitate shift onto the large (outer) chainring from the small (inner) chainring. It takes significant side force from the front derailleur to get the chain to drop off the chainring.

Also, rear derailleurs are magic!
Most of my shifty ring problems have been on SS MTBs, though. Chain bouncing all the time is better with big teeth.
