summer ride from Corolla, NC
My family and 7 other families (19 kids total) are going to be in Corolla NC for the week of July 3-10. For reasons you might be able to surmise, I'm looking for an excuse to spend some time in the saddle. My wife has made it clear that I am not going to get away for "hours on end", but I can probably swing a couple of rides in the 40-50 mile range.
It looks like I can't ride to the north because there are no paved roads, so the only option is to head south on Route 12. The first major junction is with Route 158 about 20 miles to the south, so I'll probably just have to go there, turn around, and head home. This leads me to 2 questions:
1. What conditions (roads, traffic, wind) am I likely to find along Route 12 on a weekday in early July?
2. What other rides in the area are worth driving to a start point?
Thanks in advance!

You're in luck, since I know the area there. Traffic is always heavy to light through the Corolla/Duck/Southern Shores area. But there is a Bike/Jogging/Walking path along the road all the way from Corolla to South Nags Head. In Duck, you'll be in heavy traffic along the sound and you must ride on the Road there, since the pathway is walking/strolling only. It took me 1 3/4 hours to do the route from Southern Shores to Hwy 12 ending at Beach and back. This was the Labor Day weekend too.
