Hey everybody. Started riding about 6 months ago as part of a lifestyle overhaul. Lost 60 lbs, just got a new hybrid that actually fits me, super excited!
I live in South Huntsville, ride 15-20 miles 5 nights a week. Mostly Greenway and neighborhoods.

I live off 280 in Birmingham, would love to find a riding partner, let me know. Also, any recommendations for a good bike fitter in Birmingham?

Ex Pres 12-31-12 08:10 AM

Hey there BamaBd, what kind of rider are you? I don't know of any of the faster (racer) riders from the B'ham area on here, but some of us recreational types are. Welcome to BF and welcome to the B'ham area. And if you are interested in competitive cycling, I can send you some contacts in that arena, too.

BamaBulldawg 12-31-12 10:13 PM

Ex pres, thanks. I ride road and mountain. I've been off a road bike for about 4 years until recently (rode when I lived in Athens, GA for a few years) I hold a 17-18mph avg at the moment but could ride with faster guys if I pushed myself.

Would you and the other guys on here be interested in getting together for a BF group ride?

Ex Pres 01-02-13 08:36 AM

I wish we had enough to get a BF group ride, but you should fit right in the groups I generally ride with on the road. I don't ride MB, but the BUMP group is excellent - they do a great job maintaining the trails out at Oak Mountain, and are working (or planning) the new Red Mountain Park trails, too.

On the road - join the Dirtdog Cycling google group. Good source for Weekend ride info.

Tuesday nights are good rides IMO. In the winter - dark and more climbing. Leaves from the Martin Biscuit @ 3rd Ave S & 29th @ 5:45PM. About 20+ miles and includes a nice climb thru Redmont to above Key Circle, down into Brookwood and back up via Smyer and Vestavia Lane. A fast run across Shades Crest and down Columbiana - Green Springs, etc back into the finish. Around April we'll leave from the Botanical Gardens and it's a lot flatter. Depending on daylight anywhere from 20-30+ miles.

If you can get to rides from the BBC shop in Crestline Park by 5:30, rides leave from there usually M & Th that you could hang with. I generally can't make these anymore as my job moved further away.

Great info, thank you. I'll probably try to find the slowest weekend ride I can just to get the hang of it.

Can anyone recommend a good fitter in or around Birmingham?

All the local shops have fitters, but some really are more geared to the racers, and I'm not sure how well they suit a more recreational rider. I do have one [sometimes] riding partner that used Bike Link's (Hwy 150 in Hoover) fitter and was vey impressed. He was having a few issues, for example with his hamstrings, on rides that were a little out of his comfort zone; but after his session with the BL owner he reports that all has been great. He spent about 2 hours on the fitting session.

Good to hear. That's not the store I use most often but was at the top of my list for shops to get a fit at, I'm glad you confirmed what I was thinking. Thanks

Rode today in the snow in Bama. First time ever. AWESOME! Even if it was just a few flakes.

jasonball 02-18-13 05:05 AM

silvermitsu10 02-22-13 10:32 AM

Anybody in here around the McCalla/ Hueytown area?

jhud51 02-24-13 07:51 AM

Outside Jasper, maybe 200-300 flakes.

animabella 02-25-13 09:18 PM

Anybody else in the Tuscaloosa area around here?

nsfr1206 02-26-13 10:07 PM

Hello from Enterprise!

City of many hills :(

Perhaps I'll make fitness progress climbing them.

You riding the Tristates100?

insylem 03-11-13 09:51 AM

Maybe next year. That's too soon for me. My fitness level is still WAY too low for that.

vtc12ip 03-18-13 11:47 AM

Doesn't have to be the 105. There is a 27, 45, and 62 mile option. The 27 and the 45 are pretty flat.

Auburn here. Just moved to the area to begin grad school. Riding has helped learn the area quite quickly.

Posting again from Huntsville. I ride with my club on weekends, but am looking for a daytime riding partner. SAHM here with the luxury of riding during school hours.

If there are any Southwest Alabama riders (Mobile, Bay Minete, Atmore, Baldwin and Escambia Counties) near Escambia Co., Florida/Pensacola (L.A, you know:rolleyes:) that have anything going on please post up what you have. I would enjoy some rides in the SW Alabama area with other BF members. There are a few members here at BF in our area.
