Good reminder Josh, I went ahead and registered.

EuroJosh 02-28-07 12:17 PM

Hey GT, have you put a notice up on the ITC site?

GTcommuter 02-28-07 01:22 PM

I put it on the website, but have not posted it on the list.

I'll make sure to note the pre-registration.

Stupid question. What's ITC? IntownCyclists?

BTW: I followed the link that David Crites (Georgia Bikes) posted and registered just in case I'm not working. :)

I've never heard of the Intown Cyclists! Whose group is that?

No, the ITC is the Atlanta Intown Touring Club. Check out our website at intowntouring.googlepages.com. Basically we're a fun riding club that sets out to explore the city by bike...Civil War battles, architecture, history, railroads, neighborhoods, and of course socializing.

I'm thinking about switching to a regular monthly scheduled ride. Maybe the second Saturday of each month or something.

Hey everyone i'm a fairly new road cyclist from Buford, GA anyone from around my area?

Yesterday was my first day at the new job at Intown Bicycles. What a huge change (which I expected) from my desk job at ABC. Today I have lots of aches that I haven't felt since the last time I had a "real" job. That's the down side of sitting at a computer all day. That's what I've done for the last 2.5 years. My only exercise during the work day was bike commuting, walking down the hall to the bathroom, walking down the hall to the water fountain to refill my water bottle, or going to the copy machine (3 steps from my desk).
Now I know why so many people dislike desk jobs. :crash: The only thing I'll miss is being able to log onto BF during the day. :(

Next project: Get rid of the 20 pounds I put on while sitting at that desk! http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/ashamed0005.gif

Hey Ron, are you working at intown today? I'm on the hunt for the ever elusive 3/32 half-link. Neither of "my" shops seem to have one in stock.

RonH 03-05-07 06:54 AM

I'm working 12:00 noon to close (6:30 PM).
Not sure if I'll ride though. If I do I won't get home until 7:30. That doesn't leave much time to spend with the wife before we hit the sack.
She works at Emory and we're both up at 6:00 AM so she can get to work by 7:00 AM.

Not sure if we have the half link. The shop opens at 10:00. Call Mike and ask him about it.

EuroJosh 03-05-07 07:18 AM

I'm going to be stuck in a cage today as well, I will be scouring Atlanta until I find this part...My portly friend's commute depends on it.

Pedal Wench 03-05-07 12:35 PM

Big congrats to Branman!

RonH 03-06-07 06:55 AM

I'm off today and the weather is supposed to be awesome. Should I do the Ride to the Capitol or my regular ride to Stone Mountain?

I think I hear everyone mumbling something about doing the Ride to the Capitol and then doing the SM ride.

Who do you think I am? http://mud.mm-a2.yimg.com/image/2448267066

I'll get the ordinance number tomorrow (when I'm at work) and PM you.

Okay, now I've got a question. As I mentioned earlier, I've been volunteering with the Emory Rehabilitation Center and the ING Marathon. On Sunday, I'm escorting a woman who isn't one of the elite pro wheelchair racers - she's just in a regular wheelchair, averages 2 mph. I'm on my mountain bike so I can go slow enough to ride some of the route with her, and I end up walking because she's just too slow for me to stay upright. She prefers to wheel in the road, because the sidewalks downtown are really tough on wheelchairs.

So... we're heading up Edgewood from Little Five towards downtown. I stay behind her, because I'm bigger, and wearing a flashing reflective vest and a blinky on my bike. For part of the way, we have a bike lane. The entire route has the PATH signs and Bike Route signs, and we're passed by a few large cycling groups - I assume heading to the Airport Ride. It's 8:30 Sunday morning, so practically no traffic - we're passed by about 10 cars the entire two miles or so we're on Edgewood. When the bike lane ends, there is still two lanes in each direction, and the PATH/Bike Route signs every so often.

We're on a somewhat flat section, but we're talking, so it's just easier for me to walk next to her. A police car pulls up and tells me that I can't be doing that. "What?" Apparently, he thinks I can't be walking my bike in the road. I explain that I'm escorting the wheeler, and he has nothing to say about her, but he insists that I need to be on the sidewalk if I'm walking. I said fine, and hop on my bike and try to roll along at 2mph. He drives off, and we continue on our way.

A few minutes later, he comes back and literally pulls me over, signalling me to come up and talk to him. Grrr. At this point, we're on a slightly uphill section, so she's slowed down enough that I have to walk. He says again that we can't be in the road. In my sweetest voice, I point out that we're on an official bike route, pointing to the sign that's just about 20 feet in front of us. I also say that I looked up the City of Atlanta ordinance on bikes, and if we are indeed in the city limits, which I believe we are (we're a quarter mile from Underground) that I assumed I should be following the ordinance that states that it is illegal for me to be on the sidewalk. "Now, maybe they've changed the law since I looked it up two weeks ago, and if so, I'm sincerely sorry." Batting whatever eyelashes I have. I get on my bike and sort of push myself along, so I'm not really walking, but I'm certainly not riding (on uphills, my wheeler goes less than 1mph, so I'm practically trackstanding.) He just 'huffs', tells us to be careful and peels out. My wheeler and I get a good laugh, and imagine the ruckus we would both make if we got arrested. (American with Disablities group, League of American Bicyclists, Atlanta Bike Campaign, ACLU, whoever we could think of!)

Now, my question -- what really is the law in this case? I'm not going to have a chance to walk/ride with this particular wheeler again (during the actual half-marathon, she'll go out behind the runners and won't need an escort), and during the marathon, I'll be escorting the pro-wheelers who will be flying down the road, and I won't be worrying about being able to go slow enough, I will be wondering if I can possibly keep up. (They routinely hit 40mph on downhills, and because of their low center of gravity, they corner much faster than I'll be comfortable doing.)

Should I have left my wheeler out in the road by herself when I had to walk my bike?

Hmmm. I doubt if even Shirley would give you a straight answer on this one.
Sounds like the cop was bored or just having a bad day.

Call City Hall and ask them. And if it happens again, be sure to get the cop's badge number.

Josh, let me know when Peachtree turns into the neo-retro high-end touring shop. I can't wait to see some Bruce Gordons. Maybe ANTs, Vanillas, Rivs, and Brooks??

GTcommuter 03-16-07 07:48 AM

Bump...

The next Intown Touring Club ride is scheduled for April 7 to explore Atlanta's historic railroads. The route is mostly in downtown around the viaducts and the city's original neighborhoods, then out a bit westward. Meeting time and location TBA (probably mid-morning at Underground/Five Points).

More details...intowntouring.googlepages.com

The ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon was held today. Anyone know someone who participated in this.

The traffic was murder in downtown Atlanta this morning.

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 12:48 AM.
