Hey folks, new to the board but not new to riding. I live in Newnan and am thinking of joining up on the Madras School rides once I get my legs back up to speed. Anybody on here do that? From what I hear it's about 45 miles this time of the year and the prize is weekly bragging rights.

Does Atlanta or anywhere in the Southeast ever have a 'Bike Show'? One of those marathon bike expositions at a huge venue to show off the latest greatest bike related stuff?

Hey guys!
I posted about a page ago. I've moved to Briarcliff near LaVista and took my first ride to Emory (Rollins building) and boy what a ride. It is only about 2 miles, but seems uphill the whole way, I have to admit I was a little winded. I'm used to doing 15 mile rides completely flat.
My gripe is with Clifton Rd. Going south down Clifton was madness. Traffic wasn't so bad, (about 3PM) but the road was terrible. I was going somewhat fast (I'd estimate about 13mph or so, and after plowing through some potholes I was certain I had a flat. I didn't, but it was still hard on the bike (and my rear). Maybe I should've just been going slower. Any advice? Is there a much better route to take? I think I'll go out tomorrow too and ride around.

You can also take Biltmore and avoid all the traffic on Briarcliff. It runs into Clifton near Wesley Woods.

Thanks for the info. At first I was worried about traffic, but now I'm more concerned with the condition of the roads. Traffic seems to be at a standstill no matter the hour of the day on Briarcliff and Clifton and I can sorta zip by without fear of being rushed off the road.
Another gripe on Clifton, the drop from the blacktop pavement to what I guess is like a drainage gutter was at some points nearly a foot! It was frightening. A drop off that could be devastating, if not make it impossible to get back on the roadway. I'm not shy about claiming my spot on the roadway, but I was terrified of dropping down there.
I think I'll try the Biltmore route tomorrow and maybe the Houston Mill route Sunday. I was using the BikeEmory map to try and figure it out, but nearly every inroad to Emory is rated "Most Difficult Conditions for Riding". I wasn't sure if that meant terrain, traffic, road conditions or what. Guess I'm just going to have to figure out what route is best for me.
I think I'll also try going further down Briarcliff to Emory Rd. That might be a good option for me too.

They rate the roads by terrain (flat, hills, steep/long hills).

The first and last time I went down Houston Mill, it was a beautiful road, lots of trees, but that's the borderline of the jerkwad suburbanite lands to the north, and as I was climbing up the lung-busting hill coming towards Clifton, I had this idiot in a huge SUV on my tail and then laying on the horn right behind me. What an a**hole. Sorry I don't have a gas pedal to push, ya know? I'd like to tackle the road again but the traffic is hostile.

Yeah, I rode up Houston Mill towards Clifton and encountered some impatient folks up the hill. I have to admit I enjoyed the shape of the road more than Clifton. On the way back I took Biltmore. I think I may end up making it my route. I may also try going down Old Briarcliff to Peavine Creek. Thanks for all the input.

I try to avoid the main roads through there. I come in from Northlake Mall to Emory campus via all the back roads. I used Mapmyride to plot the route. Notice you mention flat road experience. there are some hills but after a few runs you'll get used to it. none of the hills are as bad as Houston Mill. That is one of the worst hills in the area bar none.
if memory serves...
well it doesn't so I'll put in a link to one of my maps through the area to Emory.

I have never ridden a bike on Biltmore or Houston Mill just my cars. Though Biltmore is much quieter than Houston Mill and the hill where Biltmore drops out onto Clifton Road is not as bad as Houston Mill's hill. That area is nasty no matter which way you are going. I use the Clairmont Road campus entrance by the VA and Starvine Road to get into campus from the north side of campus and then all through the back roads of campus to Emory Hospital. Have a look at my mapmyride route I posted earlier. You can cut through several ways on back roads to catch Desmond Road and drop onto Clairmont Road and then cross into the Clairmont Campus entrance. That part is a nice ride from 6:00 am to about 6:15 a little traffic but sane and you have good Traffic lights. You really do want to get a good road map of the area and work out a better residential street route for your self. My 10.4 mile ride in takes about 47-49 minutes now. Been riding this since March the hills were tough to begin but now are fun to attack and challenge myself. If you find a better way into campus please let us know.

Hey guys. I've got a final route to school now. So I just stay on Briarcliff and take it down to Old Briarcliff. I take that only a bit until I get to Peavine Creek which is sorta like a trail, from there to Eagle row, and then down to Clifton and I'm right next to Rollins essentially. I take the same route on the way back. Briarcliff past Clifton isn't that bad, and it isn't that far to Old Briarcliff.
I appreciate the info though. I'm always interested in better ways to get around town. After I rode the Houston Mill route, I checked it out on mapmyride and it said the hill was like a 14% grade, and I believe it. It felt good to conquer, but that will be the last time I ride it for some time.
On a related note, how do you guys ride to Limbergh Station if you ever do? I've taken Lavista/Limbergh straight there, but there are some pretty nasty areas with loads of pot holes. I like to take the rail to Piedmont Park, Aquarium area, and Turner Field, but I am open to nice routes to that area by bike.

If you've seen me you would definitely remember...
usually about 6 am. lights on helmet front (Dinotte 200L)/back. vest with light on rear. Dinotte 400L on handlebar front. Lights on rack/panniers. a veritable christmas tree on wheels. Afternoons I am also lit up but without the vest. Nearly always wear a yellow jersey of some bright shade.
bike is blue Fuji Absolute 4.0 (got it from Bike South, sorry) I was not sure I wanted to invest much money in this when I first started a little over a year ago. I doubt I'll ever give it up now. Have been window shopping for a new ride but not in any hurry. I have got to get down to your store one of these days. When are you there?
Wave next time I'm in your area.

I live in Candler Park near Fernbank and have worked out some good ways from my house over to Piedmont Park. Also I commute to work in downtown so know some ways there too.
The friendliness of many routes depends greatly on weekday/weekend or time of day.
ETA: I play on Google Earth or map my ride to figure out routes

Any tips on the fastest way to get from the 14th Street side of Piedmont Park over to Little 5 Points without going through Piedmont Park? If it also avoids the PATH, that's good too. (it's a night route - the park is closed and the PATH just plain scary, and potentially closed too.)

good route from 14th st to little 5 points
i'm not claiming this is the best but it's how I always go and it suits me fine. Get over to 10th how ever you want (ptree, piedmont, whatever) take 10th past the park take at right the light onto Monroe and then a quick left at Woody's hot dogs, I don't know what that street's called but it becomes Virginia later. Just follow that all the way up to N highland and take a right. N. Highland will lead you to the backside of little five points take a left on Colquit and you'll be right in the heart of that neighborhood where outback bikes is. If you don't like the steady climb of Virginia you can take a right at the light onto Ponce de Leon place and head over to ponce but if it's at night that might not be the safest route and if the hill is the reason for turning you're just trading a steady mellow uphill for a steeper shorter uphill. Good luck and you can have some fun finding ways in that general area that you may enjoy more.

FYI regarding the Silver Comet Trail, especially if you are making plans for this weekend.
The Silver Comet Trail is still CLOSED between the Hiram and the Tara Drummond trailheads. Paulding County Sheriff's office says it will not be open this weekend. They still have over a dozen roads closed in the county and are working on getting those open first.
I'm planning on riding it this weekend, but will drive out to Dallas so I can pick it up west of the Tara Drummond trailhead. Supposedly it is less crowded out that way anyway.

i just sent this email to the PATH Foundation after an incident while riding the other day.
Hi,
i just thought i would make you aware of what happened to me while riding on the PATH on my way back from Stone Mountain to Atlanta last Friday afternoon (10/09/2009)
i was in the vicinity of Clarkston, when i eyed 2 black teens on a cross street ahead of me, as i passed by the cross street they were about 40-50 feet from me.
as i rode by, i got hit in the side of the head, with what i noticed was about a 2" diameter rock, which i saw falling to the ground as a turned my head to see what just happened.
also, as i did this, i saw the teens turn and start running. the rock hit my helmet, thank god, and caused no physical damage to my body. i was very lucky to be unharmed by this violent act.
i actually passed another cyclist less than a minute up the trail who was not wearing a helmet. i warned him of the possible dangers ahead.
i really would like to continue using this trail, but i cant help but feel somewhat afraid to do so.
please let me know what steps the PATH foundation is taking to ensure rider safety on the trails.

I've been riding to Stone Mountain thru Clarkston since 2001 and never had a problem. Scary.
Sorry you had the bad experience. Thanks for the heads up. I guess in the future I'll be a little more aware of who is on or near the Path.
