I ride alone all the time. I join the bike path in the area about a mile east of the I-285 overpass, between Clarkston and Scottdale. Sometimes I ride into Avondale and do a few laps around the lake, then head out to Stone Mtn. Never had a problem other than the "locals" like walking 3 to 5 abreast so they're blocking the path in the Clarkston area. Sometimes they'll move over when they hear "on your left" or "excuse me" or the click of my shifters as I slow down to pass them.

Must be a long ride for you. I see your location says Alaska.

Okay that's good. I didn't even know that lake was there! Have you ever ridden early in the morning and seen any shady characters? And I hate to ask this, but would you recommend bringing pepper spray? (I hate sounding so paranoid, but it is the #2 most dangerous city in America.)

Oh Alaska is a joke lol

I've never seen any shady characters between East Atlanta and Stone Mtn. I worry more about the idiots in their cars who are texting, late for work, etc. Although there is a guy who has been *reported* on the Southern Bicycle League website who has a flat and is looking for help. I think he has some mental problems. Don't stop to help him. I did once. The times I've seen him he was in the North Decatur Road area along the bike path.

You don't sound paranoid. I had a bad experience driving through the *wrong* neighborhood many years ago when I lived in Philadelphia, so I too worry about where I ride.

If you ride past the big multi-national church in Clarkston (parking lot side) on certain days just watch out for all the pedestrians. They just walk right out into the road (which is part of the bike route) without looking.

Haha yeah I've noticed this. I feel like they're out there everyday.

re: overly polite folks at 4-way stops

if they wave me through, i'll go. if not, i'll give the head nod indicating they should go. that seems to work well.

re: riding to stone mountain

i'm female and the closest thing to something shady i've seen was a dude riding circles in the street around decatur yelling at things only in his mind. my commute is through east atlanta, reynoldstown, old 4th ward, downtown, midtown and i haven't had any problems. in a city you should always be aware of your surroundings on the bike or not. if you keep scanning what's going on around you, it's hard for someone to sneak up on you.

Has anyone done the Arabia Mountain trail?

I've been browsing Google Maps for a few days, and I think I found a good 75 miler that would start at Tech, follow Freedom/Stone Mountain to the mountain, proceed south for a couple of miles, and then follow the Arabia Mountain trail until its end (and then back again).

It's not a rail trail, and it goes right through a nature preserve, so it looks pretty nice.

Someone pulled up beside me today when I was headed out the Stone Mtn and asked if I was riding BRAG next week. I told him BRAG started last weekend and would be ending tomorrow. He seemed really disappointed that he missed it.

reminder! Hospitality Highway ride July 10? http://400century.com/ anyone going? I went a couple years ago and it was a hoot. I missed it last year but plan to hit again this year. I'll likely do a shorter run on it as I may be riding with my wife? :-) hopefully. will see but I do want to go anyway. Fun to see bikes take over the highway.

I'd be all over it if it weren't for the fact that you have to be there before 6am on a Sunday morning. That's just too early and I never behave myself on Saturday nights.

I ran into Mike (not literally) the owner of Intown Bicycles (the bike shop I used to work at) on my second lap around Stone Mtn. He said his wife won't let him do the 3 month cross country tour he wants to do -- only 6 weeks. He asked me about working part time again while he's on the tour. Looks like I'll be riding on my days off starting next month.

re: Arabia Mnt Trail

Wondering also. I don't like to drive to ride, but a friend and I went out there once and did it; me on my heavy commuter and him on a single speed. We didn't die. Also, it's lovely.

Seems like fun! I'll have to try it. Did you start near the mall or at the bottom of the trail?

@Runner1 we started at the mall and did a round trip. 24ish miles? should be pretty well shaded most of the way this time of year.

What is the best shop intown or mechanic (VA Highlands/Morningside area) to work on a road bike that they do not sell? I am looking at 2 Titanium bikes that do not have a dealer close by to service and perhaps help with final touches on fitting etc. I would like to stay close to home.

Try Intown Bicycles. Mike (the owner) rides a Litespeed (titanium) touring bike (can't remember the model). His crews works on all bikes, all brands.

Attention ATL folks: If you have good bike shop experience Intown Bicycles is hiring. Stop by and talk with Mike, the owner.

Yeah I pulled the trigger on my new bike.... Can't wait to ride it on a long ride! Around the immediate area at the shop is not quite the same as a long ride. :-)
