I'm in NOLA too, I think the best bike is a Cycle-cross bike...built for rough road/trail use which is just what the streets are like. Cruisers work well, but they're too slow for getting around, but perfect for the nolasocialride. I ride my road, and my mtn bike around. The thing to watch out for is the streetcar tracks. They love to eat skinny tires and take people out.
I'm in NOLA.
For newbies cycling in New Orleans I developed several route maps of the city and surrounding areas.
You can Google search "New Orleans bike map" or go to http://www.joeybike.com/ and visit my Maps page. You will also find bicycle-friendly places to eat near some of my routes as well as tons of local and far away bike touring information.
You can also access my Facebook page from the site - focused entirely on the city. The Facebook page is new (launched 12-20-2011) so it currently covers a tiny fraction of the New Orleans Cycling Scene just now, but I am continually working on it.
Bicycle Michael's near the French Quarter is promoting my route maps to enhance their huge rental business, and I have received tons of positive feedback on the maps since their launch February 2011. Locals and visitors find the maps quite useful. The PDF format works on portable devices or you can print out and tile four pages together if you want the "analog" version. The maps are free for all.
Bought me a 2012 Trek Marlin, AWESOME BIKE!. I ran it 10 miles today by the levee in Gretna near the Gretna court.
Some pictures i took. enjoy..
new to the forum! :)
Welcome, folks! Enjoy your stay...
Thank you all for the heads-up on the rough street surfaces in New Orleans. We changed the tires on our Cannondale road tandem to our 700 x 32 Pasela Tour Guards before riding with Bob Sunday morning, January 29 on his 20 mile Big Easy Bike Tour. Thank you, Bob for your great presentation of your home town to this pair of tourists from Illinois. We really enjoyed the tour and recommend it to anyone planning a visit to New Orleans.
Racing this weekend here..........http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/65046748
Forecast is for rain and more rain, should be an epic event!
I live in Terrytown, LA (westbank of Jefferson Parish).
I am new to bicycling and love it. I started riding a few months ago due to fact I need to lose some weight. I have lost weight and still need to lose some weight. But after a few months, I love it.
My parents who also live in Terrytown also ride bicycles. They actually did the MS Tour from Hammond, LA to McComb, MS in October 2011 and they are planning on doing it again in October of 2012. Maybe one day (hopefully soon), I will be able to do it too.
Hello from Kenner. I've lived here for the last 5 years with my wife. Meet her while in school in San Francisco. Moved here after school, she's originally from here. Actually got married on our way over here from California.
New to the forum. Haven't even got a bike yet, just put a nice Giant Sedona on Lay-a-way at the bike store here in town. Looking forward to paying that off so I can start ridding.
Joined the forum to get advice and maybe even meet some nice folk to ride with eventually.
New Iberia here, will be purchasing bike next week been ..28 years or so but ready to get back into it..hybrid style
Mid-City, NOLA You may see me around on a red Lemond. Stop me and say howdy.
Welcome, everyone! Hope you enjoy your stay here.
Hammond La here. Strategically located between the Crescent City Cyclists and the Baron Rouge Bike Club. I go both ways.
Another from New Orleans. Thinking of riding my 4th MS150 next month but am traveling to New Zealand this week and am wondering if the return jet lag (I get back the Sunday before the ride) will be a factor. I should be able to recover and am not planning a fast run (I want to test my touring rig and do the ride with a overnight camping load) so I think I'll just HTFU and DO IT.
Looking forward to crawling uphill with my 23.6" granny gear.
