Touring route - Mississippi to DC?
Hi there,
I'm embarking on a last-minute tour of the southeast, during my university break. Have a ticket to Jackson Mississippi and a rough idea that I'd like to be in DC within 2 weeks. Yeah I know, it'll be cold.
Does anyone recommend (or NOT recommend) roads through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, etc? I'm looking for roads with little traffic and lots of interesting southern stuff.
thanks!
Matt

Here is a journal from someone who rode from New orleans to Washington that is very good.

My personal recommendation is to avoid crossing any high mountains (the Appalchains) during the winter. I would go east into SC, then head into DC that way to avoid the high points.

US Route 80 crosses Alabama and is the official Ultramarathon Cycling Association cross-route for the state. Check out my buddy Josh's record ride.
The first half passes through Selma and Montgomery if you want to see a little southern civil rights history. Probably lots of Kudzu heading east from Montgomery to Phenix City , but I'm sure their are some old small towns to see along the way, too.

I've always been curious of the traffic & road conditions along US 80, especially from Macon GA to Meridian MS. Seems the Mississippi section of it east from jackson would local traffic as it parallels I-20.
