I've been wanting to post more commute pics, since that counts as a ride! LOL. I didn't take a lot of pictures of people's houses, cause that's just kind of creepy, but there's dozens of old Acadian and plantation style homes on my route. It's quite beautiful. This route is about 10 miles to work.

    Sunrise over Cajun Country.

    Sleepy country road.

    BSNF Railway.

Old Antebellum plantation home with magnolia and oak trees.

Gravel road through some sugar cane fields. You can see a truck just passed from the dust cloud.

Nice neighborhood, through pines, majestic oaks, and cypress trees. This all used to be swamp 30 years ago.

Overlooking Bayou Lafourche through some cypress trees.

    Thibodaux! My hometown.

    Nicholls State University. Go Colonels!

Here's an old cemetary. Most of the cemetaries in this part of the state are above ground, the water table is just too high to bury people here. This is one of the oldest and largest, it's the size of an entire city block. Some of the tombs are hundreds of years old.

Today’s ride: Left a little late this morning thinking I would have to ride by myself. My plan was to head to Panera for coffee and then go north of SR 46 to see if the bridge had been completed so that one can ride on out to the DeBerry Mansion. When I got to Panera my friend Jim was already there and had his coffee, so we hooked up and rode together. When we got to the bridge it was still being worked on and one of the workers said it would not be open to traffic for two more weeks, so the DeBerry ride will have to wait for a couple of weeks. Since we could not get across the bridge we turned around and headed to Deer Path and the horse farms. At Deer Path we took a water break then headed to the north trail head where we ran into Chuck and he joined us on the ride back. The weather was perfect except for the 25 mph head wind on the return trip.

The way things are going this month I could have another 900 mile month.

    Statistics for: 05/16/2011
    Miles today: 45+
    Mileage this month May: 488+
    Mileage this year: 3458+
Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 49+%
    Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: +4
    Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +772 miles
Average miles per ride this year: 39+
Average miles per ride this month: 44+
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 3541, and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach.

Tomorrow should be another perfect ride day.

FunkyStickman, thanks for the photos. I love old homes and cemeteries. That may sound a little kooky but I find them interesting. Thanks for posting.

Will this flooding have any effect on you? I hope not...

You're welcome... I like sharing things like that. It looks like we might get a little water in some of the drainage ditches and canals, but my house is about 15 feet above sea level, and in town is 20+ feet, we should be okay unless something really bad happens, like a huge rainstorm. If we get a few inches of rain, it will have nowhere to drain to, and streets will back up with water, I've seen it happen before. Nothing horrible, just a nuisance. The folks closer to the spillway outlet will have it much worse than we will.

Yep, Post office ride plus some. 13.26 miles about 7 of which were on the trails. About 1hr 13min ride. LOTS of headwind for the ride to the post office. The wind was great when I was on the trails

The trail I rode is at the Carl Duval Moore State Forest. The trail is only about 1.25 miles long. I did 4 laps of the trail today 2 one way.... and 2 the other way. It has some twists & turns through the woods with roots and stuff. It also has a bit of open stuff where you can get moving pretty fast.

Pic 1.. The trail is about a 1/2 mile of the main road.

Yep, About the same as yesterday 13.29 miles. Same ride as yesterday. I was running late and forgot the post office closes for lunch from 1 to 2pm. My legs were burning by the time I got there (3 minutes to spare). The whole 3 miles to the post office with a huge headwind just like yesterday... Did 4 laps at the trail again. Same ride almost same distance only 3 minutes shorter ride time today.. about 1hr 10mins. .... great ride.... perfect temp....

Commuted to work Monday & Tuesday, taking a car day today and will be back at it Thursday. I thought there would be more bikes out for Bike to Work Week, but there seem to be fewer, just the regulars. The unseasonably cool temperatures might be scaring them off. Don't know why, it's not full on cold and has been nice riding. Yesterday I grabbed a few pics on my way home.

A movie shooting at 14th & Peachtree, probably Good Deeds. Fun fact, on my way in I passed the set up for The Three Stooges shoot.

A shot of the bike lane on Peachtree St. @ 10th. Oh, right, there isn't one.

    Downtown, taller buildings.

Heading down Edgewood towards home looking back at downtown.

Stopped for a shot of the commuter.

It's not all urban wasteland. I think they shot Hall Pass in this neighborhood.

    East Atlanta Village

    Lovely old home.

The cleanest part of the bike lane into my neighborhood. It's often full of sand, broken glass, plants growing into it, dead animals and the dirty diaper I saw yesterday but spared you of.

A free range dog came running over to me barking as I was taking a picture of the "share the road" sign. Luckily he was just happy and bouncy. You can see his owner on the porch calling him back. There are 3 of those share the road signs on the two mile stretch down into my neighborhood which is kind of nice.

Anyway, that's my afternoon commute. There are a few more pics in here.

abracapocus... Well if they EVER need an extra on the set with cool looking panniers your the one Seems like they are doing a lot of filming for movies in ATL. At least the owner of the dog was calling the dog. What I hate is when the owner is in the yard and looking at you & the dog... And not calling the dog or saying anything, while the dog is chasing or running at you.

How is the road rash? Healing up?

    Cool pictures btw...

@zzOtherlandzz georgia has some tax breaks in place that have attracted hollywood. i'm not a celeb chaser, but it's kind of nice to see atlanta popping up more on the big & little screen. at least this dog eventually listened to his owner. mine won't.

the knee is taking forever to heal, but it is healing. it gets more bendable each day.

between your trail shots and watching a friend in a mountain bike race, i'm almost interested in going off road. :-)

Today’s ride: Met my friend Jim at 7:00 AM this morning at the San Sebastian Trail Head and we drone to Winter Garden and got on the West Orange Trail. It was about 7 miles to Kilarney Station where we picked up the South Lake Trail. After about 5 mile of small rolling hills we turned north towards Ferndale. The hills got a little longer and a little steeper and I was doing just fine with my 39/25 then we hit the wall and I didn’t have any more gears. Some will say this hill is one of the hardest in Florida and ranks right up there with Sugar Loaf. Well I walked the top half and my legs were spent. At the 20 mile mark we turned around and headed back. We stopped in Winter Garden for lunch at the Moon Cricket Café and had a great fish sandwich. After that we drove over to the Cat Trike factory and took the tour and did a test ride. Let me tell you if you have a mind to get a Trike the Cat Trike 700 is the one to get. Very fast and very comfortable top quality.

Yep, Went to G.ville to Sams Club & the bike shop. Got the spoke for my road bike and a couple of extra just to have on hand. Rode from the Alachua County fairgrounds (by the g.ville airport on 39th) to Grandin the start of the PLB trail. Was a GREAT ride with the wind at our backs most of the way. The last 3rd was pretty slow, my friend wasn't feeling it today. Ended up riding 24.68 miles. (on the 29'er). Perfect temp, not many more of these days left b4 it gets HOT.

Just a few pictures.. nothing special ....

1st pic... Just a shot of 39th ave by the fairgrounds in G.ville.
2nd pic.. Approaching the bridge over US301, new bridge.
3rd pic .. Just a shot coming down the bridge.

Rode 23 miles on the Silver Comet today. Man am I sorry I did. Rode with some guys from work so the ego thing kicked in and stayed with them when I should have turned around. Oh well. Definitely need some decent shorts and shoes tho.

Yep, 13.28 miles 3/4 on the road and 1/4 on the trail. Rode with friend again today. The other friend bailed again at the last minute. He says he will go on a ride tomorrow though.. LOL Today we rode the only paved road through our subdivision here in the sticks... At the top of the hill that we are descending in the picture is the volunteer fire dept. After that we went and did a lap and a half at the lil trail I have been riding on. I was following friend on the first lap and zigged when I should have zagged and caught my sleeve on a tree. Tore my shirt & scratched my arm a bit... but didn't fall. Made note to self "don't worry about keeping up with the guy in front of me while going through the trees"....

Yep got out for a ride today. Didn't do my usual post office ride because I had a customer coming over to pick up his PC. The friend that I usually ride with was getting ready to leave when I got back home I was like "are you going for a ride? Did you NOT invite me to go?". He said he had an appointment for x-rays in town at 3:30. Said he was going to ride. I was like give me 10 minutes and i'll be ready. So he waited. I think that is the fastest I have ridden to town in a LONG time.... The heat about got me by the time we got there though.. Only 11.5 miles but at a lot faster pace than I'm used to. I don't get it this is the same guy that was about dead when we got done with the 25 mile ride the other day (at a lot slower pace). The same guy that was out of gas yesterday when we rode.... And here today he is riding like crazy there and back.. I was SPENT when we got back today and he still had energy to spare. I feel great now though We rode 23.46 miles today... No pictures.... Was in a hurry forgot the camera.

AND..... After 45 minutes of waiting at the x-ray place they told us that his doctors fax machine was broken so NO paperwork.... NO x-rays.... But like I said a good ride..

Today’s ride: Met my friend Dick at 7:30 AM this morning at the San Sebastian Trail Head and we rode to Panera Bread for breakfast. From there it was out to Seminole Heights and Deer Path. We took a break for some water then back to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head where we met Phil who rode with us back to the San Sebastian Trail Head. The temp was in the low 90s when we got back. Yep, Friend and I got to the PLB trail head in Grandin at about 6pm. It actually had cooled off slightly by then. No wind to speak of. Saw the owner of the local bike shop in Palatka and talked to him for a few minutes. It was a really nice ride with shade most of the way there and back. I was feeling good today... WAY better than yesterday... We ended up riding 22.62 miles.... GREAT ride....

Ohhh I did manage to take the cassette apart (and put back together) and install a spoke on the back wheel of my road bike. First time doing both things. Bought a truing stand off of eBay awhile back and managed to get the wheel pretty straight. Of course it took my like 2hrs to do everything LOL.

I have been down with bad allergies since last Thursday's trip to north GA. Finally felt better today so went out for a short ride. Only did 28 miles but I had a tough time getting home. Now my whole body hurts and my stomach just doesn't feel right.
This is my first bad experience with allergies. Usually I just have the sneezing and stuffy nose.
Sure wish I knew what our friend cut and spread when he mowed the pasture a few hours before we got there.

Yep... Took off to the PLB trail again in Grandin. Decided to ride the trail from Grandin through Florahome (the next part to be paved .... this year I hope.) Wanted to get some pictures before they paved it. And then later get some more pictures when they get it paved.

The next section to be paved is going to be 4.42 miles, so I rode 4.42 out and back. Right now that section is VERY rocky, almost the whole way is the oldrail road rocks. Some of the trail has a bit of grass on top but still very rough. Most of the pictures I took while riding were blurry. It is going to be nice when it gets paved, almost the whole section will be at least partially shaded no matter what time of day you ride. It took me an hour and 3 minutes to ride the 8.84 miles or so. It was a really good workout riding on the rocks.... LOTS OF FUN...

Got back to the van in Grandin and was still feeling good so decided to ride part of the paved trail. Rode another 4 miles out and 4 back. I might have rode a bit further but it was getting late and I wanted to make it back to the van before it got dark.

    Almost 17 miles today..

1st pic.. Old railroad trestle. The 1x6's they had over the old railroad ties looked a bit iffy to cross. Lots of rot in the ties below the 1x6s. I just learned that back in Feb of this year there was an ultra marathon ran on this section of the trail and all the way to Palatka. I cant imagine running over this trestle on those little 1x6s... and at night even... uggg.

2nd pic... Another little bridge.... This one had sheets of 3/4inch plywood overlapped. Despite they way it looked it seemed pretty sturdy.

3rd pic.. Nice shaded section.... Going to be nice when paved..

4th pic.. Just another shot of the trail.

5th pic... My water bottle when I got done riding the un-paved trail today... lol

Yep, 20.74 miles on the PLB trail. (paved part). It was one of those days that I didn't feel like riding but rode anyway. Didn't feel that good out on the bike today. No energy and my legs seemed like led. But glad I went and feel good now.. Was smoke haze in the air near the trail head... cleared up a bit towards Keystone. There might be a forest fire or something in the area.

Today’s ride: Met my friend Dick at 7:00 AM this morning at the San Sebastian Trail Head and we rode to Panera Bread for breakfast. Our friend and other riding partner Jim caught up with us at the breakfast table. From there it was out to Seminole Heights and Deer Path. We took a break for some water then back to the Sylvan Lake Trail Head where we took our second break. The temp was in the low 90s when we got back. Summer is here…

Yep.... Got out for a rare morning ride. Went to the PLB trail again. Rode the 10 miles out and then rode about 1.5 miles out and back on the un-paved part of the trail west of Keystone Heights to where it crosses State Road 100. Man that chunk of trail is ROUGH with LOTS of railroad rocks right up on the surface. By the time I was finished riding that section my hands were tired from gripping the bars so tightly. Great ride... quite a few people out enjoying the trail along with me. 23.66 miles total...
