Out of garage at 0800, 80F with 80% humidity, for the 5 miles to Cape Haze Pioneer Trail's trail head. Talking to the guys and one mentions that my rear tire looks low.......FLAT is more like it. Not the way to start a ride. We head out and at 4 mile mark I look down and see a dime. Turn around, stop and it's 2 dimes!!!!! Well, 20 cents for a new tube!!!! Took 3 miles at 21mph into a wind to catch back up and that sealed the day for me. Decide at the 21 mile mark to head back home resulting in a disappointing 33 miles today.

Took the Litespeed to the bike trail today. Got there at 7:15AM. The temps and humidity were lower than usual this morning so the ride was great. Did my usual ride from Hernando to the north end of the trail and back.

Upgraded my TerraTrike Rambler to a Catrike 5.5.9. the difference is amazing. It's lower, faster and very cool looking. I thought I would miss riding my Madone a lot, but truth is, the recumbent trikes are so much more comfortable, I hate to stop riding. I've put on 111 + miles since Monday - 32 of it on the new Catrike. Got a nice 20 mile ride this morning around my community and am looking forward to cooler weather to take it to the Withlacoochee and ride a bit with RonH. Head's up, Ron ... you'll have to ride about half-speed to ride with me!

That's a nice looking trike. :thumb: Can't wait to ride with you.

Great ten mile ride on the cart paths today. Stopped and had some mexican the second time around, and ended up making it a half a time around. Really hot out, even in the shade.

😊 That was said with a large dose of irony.
We're usually out there about 7, I'm not a big lover of riding with the sun overhead, but i do like a bit of a lie in at the weekend. If we can be out there and finished riding by 10am, I'm okay, much later than that and I'm going to start overheating.

As a matter of interest, as nice and as quiet as the North end of the trail is, don't you find it a bit unshaded?

We've been riding the section between lake Townsend and Inverness lately, as it seems a little more shaded. I love the remote feel and less traffic of the North part of the trail through.

Glad to hear you're back up to speed after the surgery, that's great news. 👍

Rode to the north end and back. My average speed has been getting faster so I guess that means I'm almost back to where I was before the last surgery. :)

Did you miss the end on that post... "spent the next hour when I got home mending the puncture on the Litespeed for tomorrow's ride"? 😉

I don't mind the lack of shade. This is Florida, the sunshine state. ;)

When I got home I checked the tire for punctures, nails, glass shard, wire brad, etc. Found nothing so put in a new tube and inflated it. I checked the old tube but found on punctures. I pumped it up and left it in the garage. It was almost flat the next morning, so either it has a very slow leak or a leak at the valve. It went in the trash.

Got a late start today. Didn't get to the trail until 8:45AM. The humidity seemed lower than usual so it wasn't too bad. Did my usual ride to the north end and back.

abbynormal 07-26-16 06:01 PM

This thread will help me/encourage me as I begin tomorrow as soon as I walk out of the store with my bike:) I'll be taking a short ride as I read getting use to a saddle (read a lot about them before going ahead and buying something way cushy). Oochee ouchee,

I'll check back in with how far a make it:) I know I could go further than "the plan" but I read 1 to 2 miles first time. I haven't ridden since 2014 so easy does it;)

Wonderful, on surviving cancer! Your ride sound great too. My brother is a prostate cancer survivor as well:):thumb:

This is so neat, wtg! I am 63 and starting my first "short" ride tomorrow. Just buying a inexpensive bike to start. I need to make sure I am going to stay serious. I'm been a walker/hiker for a few years now, but I want to go much further, and faster;)

You will love riding a trike. I bought a less expensive trike for the same reason - wasn't sure I'd stick with it. Sold it and bought the 559 within four months. I ride almost every day - around 20 miles per day - and, if it were not so darn hot in Florida in the summer time, I'd go back out in the early evening and ride another hour or so - it is so relaxing and comfortable to ride. Looking forward to fall when that will become a reality.

There is a discussion going on in the Bent Rider's forum right now about how riding a trike is so much less stressful than riding an upright bike. Balance is not an issue, you can stop without having to unclip, you can look around without running off the road or trail. Check it out - there are some interesting comments. Do trikes free your mind? - BentRider Online Forums

Good luck with your new trike. That 'short' ride will turn into much longer rides, I'm sure.

I'm sorry, I didn't buy a Trike, I just came across your post and thought yours was neat:) I will keep these in mind because I never know what may develop in the future:) I had a landlord that loved his, and rode it after his knees gave out from jogging. He loved his as well;)

Today's ride began at 0332 for the first 50 miles. Returned home for a shower, dry kit, bite to eat, replenish hydration/nutrients then out for another 59 miles. The 109 miles were in memory of biking buddy Pete Cornell who was killed while biking 4 years ago today by an 18 wheeler. Met up with a few other guys Pete rode with, stopped at First Watch in Sarasota and I had Pete's favorite blueberry pancake. This was an exception for me since I do not do the breakfast thing when out riding. Never really have done the breakfast break thing to begin with and after having gone through my prostate cancer bit last year I just find it an unnecessary stop as far as seeking a healthier nutritional lifestyle.

Interesting take on the cancer thing is that I don't agree with the "cancer survivor" label. My nephew was a "cancer survivor" until it came back more aggressively and deadly. I am surviving after having been treated for prostate cancer but will not be an official survivor until I die due to something other than cancer. JMOO.

Great reading that at 63 you are at least willing to make the effort where as many simply sit and vegetate. Be warned that an inexpensive bike WILL NOT provide the quality ride obtainable from a finely tuned quality bike. Not saying that a good ride can't be had, just saying it requires more effort. I have done 60 miles on my $100.00 Target Magna Hybrid, but it was not as enjoyable as the same distance or even longer, when compared to my other bikes.

Thanks Oldtryguy, yep, I'm not planning to vegetate;) I will try and keep up on my posting here, so much knowledge to gather:) from those that have gone before me. I'm looking for the 50+ group right now because the 65+ won't let me in, LOL!! I'll be 64 in December, so seems my age is once again, sorta stuck in the middle:lol:

Juan Foote 07-26-16 08:17 PM

Nice seven mile slow paced ride with the wife and friend down at the cart paths again this evening. Stopped in for some (more) Mexican food and a pitcher of 'ritas....glad the wife was there to drive us home. Great time.

Keep on pedaling and breathing and chances are good that you'll make the 65+ group. :D I hit 66 on 7/10 and rode 141 miles for my birthday ride instead of the "ride your age" thing. Never have conformed to standards. :innocent:

Hoping for smooth roads ahead for you.

I wonder how far I'll end up being able to ride in one day. I don't want to race, just keep moving, but plan to do a lot of sight-seeing, as well as camping. I want to meet people, I love meeting new people, from all kinds of places. I've always been the type that can talk to anyone I meet as if I've known them all my life:) I plan to keep a journal, and stay in touch using my iphone as well.

I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but so looking forward to the possibilities:) Congrats on your birthday ride, sounds wonderful:) I'm also really into photography (amateur) but am going to get a smaller camera to carry, that's for sure;)

First ride on my new bike I brought home today. I made it 1.4 miles, and that was mostly level lanes. I did it in 25 min. which may sound slow, but I had to stop and put my chain back on. I didn't shift right and it popped off. Fixed that and went on.

I just spent under 100 for both bike, and helmet. It rides nice though a Schwinn Roadmaster mt. bike. Nothing special to some, but I am thrilled to have it. I listened to the pros, and took it way easy as I have to get used to that saddle. It's slim, and a tiny bit of padding. But I do feel the whole bike is a nice fit, and I will be used to it in time:) I share a photo of it here, and just one of the nice areas I have to get used to riding again. It's been at least 2 years since I rode at all.

I've never done road-tours, but that is my eventual goal. Nothing majestic, I'd be happy to make up the Oregon Coast one day. Live in Oregon all my life, but never road the coast on a bicycle so will certainly plan to see a lot more;) Denise

Hey Abby, you do realize there is a regional forum for California as well?
You are posting in the SE....great to have you anyway, but we might have a hard time coming to check out the ride.

RonH 07-29-16 05:57 AM

S/He's a new member posting all over. S/He's posted in PNW, NorCal, etc.
Have fun on the new bike abbynormal. :thumb:
And you can swap saddles any time. Many bike shops have test saddles that you can borrow for 2-4 weeks generally.

Y'all take care, and if you get to the NW better let me know k?? I'm not warnin you if I'm comin your way though:):commute:I'm a girl btw, but I do ride a fellers-type bike;)

Did Atlanta Critical Mass last night. Was a really good ride, we went all over from Buckhead to Little Five and a whole lot of inbetween. 16 miles total, no idea how many feet climbing yet.

The new bike did wonderfully too....

RonH 07-30-16 10:36 AM

No ride yesterday. Went to the uro surgeon to get my latest PSA results. Very happy to report my PSA is still 0. :)
Went out today before the rain got here. Did my usual ride from Hernando to the north end of the trail and back.
