[QUOTE=zzOtherlandzz;8929975]... I rode it from the middle to one end.. back to the middle. Then to the other end and back. Soooo I guess it was an out and back followed by another out and back lol. QUOTE]

    I'd call that a lap

Round trip to work and back, 13+.

Wussed on the 7:30 am ride and could have kicked myself considering the nice group of riders out this morning.

I don't mind at all. I like the trail because I can just "ride" without having to worry about cars, log trucks, dump trucks and bad attitude drivers on the road. You do cross a few roads but most of the time there is no traffic. Be careful though because as I mentioned in another thread there was a police officer writing tickets for riders that did not stop at one of the stop signs. Another thing I really like is that a LOT of the trail is shaded even in the mid day sun.

At the Hawthorne trail head there is a drinking fountain and some shaded benches, no rest room though. But there is a convenience store and a gas station within a mile of the trail head. There isn't a whole lot to see from the Hawthorne trail head to about mile marker 7 (what I call the middle of the trail). But it is a nice ride with lots of shade and pretty long stretches with no stops. Its also not a crowded as the G.ville end of the trail, where there is usually a lot more walkers, runners, roller bladers and the like.

From about the middle of the trail to Gainesville its a lot more scenic. Between mile marker 4 & 5 there is a pretty cool boardwalk that follows Prairie Creek back a bit. Its a nice spot for a rest.. maybe catch a glimpse of a gator. Once you cross the creek the trail gets a bit more hilly and curvy. There is a nice hill between mile marker 3 & 4, its weird I have ridden the trail a hundred times... and never actually checked to see how long the hill is. If i were to guess i would say a bit over 1/3 of a mile climb, pretty good hill for Florida. Its not just a straight shot up the hill, the trail curves back and forth a few times. Between marker 1 & 2 you can take the Alachua Lake overlook trail (its paved also). Its about a mile long and has a great view of the Paynes Prairie at the end. At the Gainesville trail head there are rest rooms, picnic tables, water faucet. You can also check out the old building built around the springs. There is also another paved trail that will take you into Gainesville proper.

I apologize for being a bit wordy here.... If you need anymore specifics just give me a holler...

DOH!!!!!!! Didn't get a ride in today.... People showed up..... then it rained LOL

Probably got in about 25-30 miles in the rain Saturday morning. We cut the ride short in the downpour. Rained again Sunday, too. Didn't ride, but ref'd a time trial and watched others ride in the rain.

I'm new to the forum. I've always enjoyed biking but now I'm starting to get a bit more serious about it. I'm visiting relatives in Palm Harbor, FL. Saturday ... borrowed my dad's bike and rode 14 miles: up the Pinellas trail and back down Belcher Road. Not much for you seasoned riders but quite an accomplishment for me. Many of the roads in North Pinellas County now have bike lanes. Great to see!

    Hey zzOtherlandzz
Thanks for the trail report buddy. My daughter and I will be up that way in a week or two to check it out and add that trail to our list.

Great riding weather. Since the cold front went thru on Sunday and the rain is gone the temperature has been very delightful. Sunny and ~70F when I left the house. The winds were a real challenge, ~20 miles an hour from the E and NE. Had a head wind all to way out and a nice tailwind all the way home.

Yeah I was going to do one more ride on Monday before travelling home, but didn't because of the rain. Looks like you guys are in for a lot of rain this week.

no ride today but i have been riding up mountains alot this year. the wire on my computer broke off right at the computer (can't fix). i have been riding without it and it has been GREAT. just enjoying the ride and thinking about cadence.
i regularly ride up to Newfound Gap in the Smokies, this past Sat. decided to go over to N.C. and back. when I hit the bottom on the other side i began to think... uh oh, what have i done! but in the end it was GREAT.
road up Bluff Mountain yesterday ( when in Sevierville it is the mountain you first pass coming in on the right with towers sticking up on top) great ride, lots of switchbacks, places to sit and rest if you have tall gears and need to, little traffic, and the best views in the smokies (views of the entire smoky mountain range). another plus yesterday. a little teenie kid on his deck with mom going nuts that a guy on a bike was going by!

Returned home (Atlanta area) after a weekend in Florida. Did my typical 5 mile ride this morning before the kids got up. I learned two things:

    1. riding in Florida is *easy* (when it's not raining)

    2. I hate biking up hills.

So why do the commuters on McGinnis Ferry Road honk at me? Isn't 25 miles an hour (downhill) fast enough?

Tomorrow I'm planning to do something longer. But I still have a long way to go to get to a level of proficiency and endurance that I want. I am seriously out of shape.

yah, ok, so riding in fl is easy where its not raining, or blowing, or 100+ degrees out.
and no we don't have any 'real hills' and it takes a lot of miles and searching to find something resembling a hill, but we make do with what we have.

and what we have, yet again, is more rain. and its putting a damper on my progression.

i did ride into work yesterday with a boating/camping style raincoat on. well i found a gap and the inside of my jacket was more wet than the outside, but i didn't have time to get rid of it, or anywhere to carry it.

not likely to ride today, due to rain... again
