Despite some cool weather I took the kids out on the train (tandem + trailercycle). After a loop in the neighborhood, my youngest said she was cold and wanted to go home. We dropped her off and my son and I continued on, minus the trailercycle, for another 6 miles. I then put 20 minutes on the trainer with my fixed gear.

I rode early this morning (about 5:30 AM). I was at Cumberland Parkway and Paces Ferry in Vinings, and basically stayed on or near those roads. It was a bit cool, with a light mist, but all in all a nice ride.

yep... a little cooler out than I would prefer and annoyingly windy (54,winds SSE at 14 gusting to 20) but still a good ride. 24.07miles with an 18.7 average. Looks like the time in on the trainer was well spent.

January 24, yes another great but very cloudy & windy day in Central FL

Temp in the low 70s when I left to high 70s when I got back today, wind out of the SSE at 20 mph so I got out for another 30+ miles this afternoon. I am 143 miles ahead of this time last year and have ridden 15 days TY vs 13 days LY.

Yes I did. I decided to test my rain gear today, so I rode from East Atlanta up to my LBS (Intown Bicycles on Monroe by Piedmont Park) to pick up a few supplies, and took a long meandering route back (through Virginia Highlands, Druid Hills, Edgewood, and Kirkwood). Got back in just a few minutes ago. If I'd gone straight to the LBS and back it would've been 9 miles total. The recreational part of the ride stretched it to a bit over 18 slow miles, given the traffic and rain.

yes we did

We were out on the MBs today. Decided to try a new preserve that we've never done.

http://sjr.state.fl.us/recreationgui...rie/index.html

First 4 miles was on shellrock and so I thought this 10.8 mile loop would be a breeze. Then we hit the grass/mud for the rest of the ride. Winds at our back the first 4 miles but against us most of the rest of the way. Not much wildlife today. Only some turkey buzzards and lots of water fowl. At least we didn't get wet!

I don't think I've posted this week, so after 2 weeks of sub freezing temps in NEFL I'm back on the bike.

207 recorded this week before today's battle of olustee ride/race, an epic 115 miler from g-ville north into the osceola forest.

I first flatted 15 miles in, replaced the tube and got a ride up a few miles? to a crash scene (no one hurt but a carbon fork shattered). Got in with a couple of guys from Naples Cyclery and got back on.

I worked my way back up to make contact with everyone from the shop before starting another slow leak. Stopped to top off with a co2 and got a 30mph+ motor pace back up to the group. Another new tube at the rest stop, that I think was about 50 miles in, which also started getting soft as the pace kept ramping up.

Now on my third tube of the day, same rear wheel, I got the ride back in front of the group, so that I might have a chance to hope back in. I was able to get on in the front and sat in a bit with the front 15-20 before getting into the mix and taking a turn or two in the 20mph+ head wind at 25mph+(/-). I can only do that for so long and I knew that a couple of our guys were off the back so I pulled out, sat up, and you'd think I'd pulled a chute as I went backwards.

Sitting at the back, wondering just how far back my friends were, I chose to drift off the back and work my way back with them. They were even further back than I'd hoped, and when I thought they had made it back up to me, it wasn't them. Oh well, I rode on with this guy for a while before my rear went soft again. I wanted to get into Alachua before using my last new tube, but when the guy I was riding with (from Savanah I think) stopped due to hot spots I chose to use my last co2 to replace my tube, yet again.

So now, my friends have come and rolled on as did a few young locals while I'm slowly and carefully checking my tire, inside and out as well as the rim and anything else that may be the cause. My last new tube, still had a pacthed one and patch kit, is an ultra light which makes it all the way back. Only one problem, don't know how far, fast or anything because my transmiter got outta wack with every tube change.

Started at 9:10 and finished about 3:15.

I rode 21 miles today, half of it into vicious headwinds. I've been less tired after riding centuries.

The longest part of the ride was a utility trip I took, trying out a new route to the Dekalb Farmer's Market from East Atlanta. I'd mapped it out on bikely.com a long time ago, and just got around to trying it out today. Here's the map. It goes through East Atlanta, Kirkwood, East Lake, an area I think is probably part of the Belvedere neighborhood (Midway north of Memorial) and Avondale Estates. It's a good route, though Hosea Williams Boulevard and Midway are hilly. I came back with big panniers packed with groceries.

Made a utility run to the bank, then made loops around the neighborhood. Headwinds from the west are still heavy. At one point in my life I thought of headwinds as just a training challenge. At this point it's a challenge I'd cheerfully do without.

Until yesterday I had been off of the bike for I think 24 days.... A series of things kept me from riding. First it was the really cold weather (for Florida) that kept me from doing much riding, just could not get out there in the cold. And then a couple of weeks ago my mom spent 4 days is the hospital (she is all fixed up with new meds for her COPD now, and doing better). And for the past week and a half or so i've been battling the flu. Yesterday I rode 9.5 miles on the road bike WITH THE WIND.... lol .. VERY windy I would say about 15mph steady with gusts a bit higher. Was a nice ride until I stopped and started hacking a little bit, still not quite over the flu. Felt good though after the brief bit of coughing. Today rode the MTB to the post office... about 3 miles into the same 15mph wind and 3 miles back (mostly with the wind). Still not feeling 100% but feeling better!!

I feel the same as larryfeltonj ... I used to ride on the coast a lot on A1A south of St. Augustine. Most times either one way or the other you would ride into a headwind. Used to be a challenge ride into the headwind as far as I could go and then fly back with the wind. Well except those times when the wind would change in the middle of the ride.... OHHHH those were fun.. LOL.... But now... yep i would rather just avoid the head wind all together....

I bike commuted into work this morning (as usual). It was about 31 degrees F when I made the ride, which wouldn't have been too bad except the winds continue to be an issue. The chill was pretty manageable except for my fingers. I need to shop for gloves which give better protection against this sort of persistent wind.

Got another short ride in today. I had to go to Gainesville, packed up the road bike, friend and his bike and rode a bit of the Gainesville Hawthorne trail on the way. We rode from Hawthorne for about 9 miles to what I call the middle of the trail where my mom picked us up. I would have liked to ride a bit more but my friend isn't quite used to riding yet and well his "behind" said it was time to stop .. LOL A bit chilly in the shade of the trial but a really nice leisurely ride. Quite a few people on the trail for a middle of the day ride. Felling a bit better each day... Almost got this flu/cold beat. I still figure a short ride is better than no ride... 3 days in a row now....

My ride early this morning (about 5 AM) consisted of doing a checkout ride of a 1978 Raleigh Shopper which I'm configuring as my short distance/heavy hauling bike. It's a three speed, shaped like a non-folding Raleigh Twenty, but with larger tires. It has a generator light, and rear and front racks and baskets. The old roadie part of me is a little embarrassed to be riding it, but it's a sturdy, practical utility bike.

Temp in the high 60s when I left to low 70s when I got back today, wind out of the SE @ 2 mph so I got out for another 25+ miles this afternoon. Got a late start today due to spending most of the morning with the Parks Dept. and a County Commissioner discussing my trail project. It's a little early to tell which way things will go but I am keeping a positive attitude. We will probably have some more
conversation tomorrow.
Photos below are the entrance to a housing development that I ride by on occasions. Last week a car took out one of the entrance sign. My guess is the car was pretty messed up as well. The other picture is a buddy that I take some apples to when I go his way

Finally got to ride again today! Yesterday was my birthday and I really wanted to ride my age (46), but it wasn't to be. Our old dog has been sick and is recovering from surgery, so I have spent the last week nursing her and washing blood and bodily fluids out of blankets and sheets. Yesterday when I was cleaning her up, I noticed the stitches had come out and she had a big hole in her gut. Needless to say, I took her right to the vet! They kept her overnight so they could do some more surgery today to seal her up again, so I got to go for a ride. Just the normal 22.4 miles, hopefully I'll get to go again tomorrow. Jazzy will be spending the weekend with the vet, so I'll take the German Shepherd Niki over to visit her tomorrow. They don't like being apart!

Happy late birthday.. Boatdesigner !!! And I hope the vet gets your dog all fixed up and back home soon.

I'm still not feeling a 100% yet but I did ride the MTB to the post office today. Was great riding weather again, I even had hopes of a second ride to town on the road bike.. But didn't happen one thing led to another and the next thing I know.... the daylight was gone. But that is 4 days in a row with at least short rides... I'm still going with my new motto .... A short ride is better than no ride!!! LOL

Ugggg looks like an all day rain, I dont see a ride to the post office in the works today. And just getting over the flu I really dont feel like riding in the rain with the temps in the 60's.... <sigh> Get the trainer out and dust it off ?? Its a thought.... and most likely will just remain a thought.... LOL

While I was out today, I saw something that reminded me of the fact that really there is no excuse, rain or shine, you can always ride a bike. As I was sitting in the car, near the Salvation Army I see a cyclist fly by, wearing reflective clothes and cruising at an amazing speed soaked to a point where his outside slicker was stuck to his skin but he was still riding, not caring that rain was falling or water that may of been flying up into his face.

It reminded me that you can ride no matter the weather it is just a matter of gritting your teeth jumping on the bike and riding rain or shine, I wish I would of got a picture, but it was surely a reminder to me as a visual cue that it can be done, that riding a bike more can and should be done.
To whomever that is, thanks for the reminder, and the r
eason to make this challenge come about by Februrary 28th 2010.
via Ride My Bike More on 43 Things

Which basically speaks to the idea, that even when it is raining, after I saw this one person, on his bike in the pouring rain, that same day I went out and rode, I made a quality decision to do it, even knowing I would most likely be soaked after, even if it was a short ride, after seeing only one person riding in pouring rain, it seemed to prove that really there is little excuse not to ride. Though as the saying goes "To Each Their Own"

Far as Taking A Ride Today, I feel almost like an infidel when I consider that even after that day, even after that inspiration I still did not ride today.

yes...but only a mere 7 miles on the Withlachochee near Inverness. Weather man said it was in the low 50s. I'm sure with the wind factor, it was colder. Well, as hubby says, 7 miles is better than no miles. Did manage to put in another 7 miles at the gym yesterday on the recumbent. Sure am not getting the miles in like I was during the summer. We're talking about getting a trainer so we can use it on these colder north FL days.

No ride today, mercury never got above the 50* mark so I stayed by the fire. Still finished the month pretty good 585 miles and 19 ride days. That is about 145 miles further than last Jan.
