Nice easy ride this morning with Bob and Ralph. Weather looks bad for tomorrow so figured I had better get a ride in today.

It was good to have Roscoe back driving the train this morning. Actual ride was approximately 40 miles today. I accidentally shut my Garmin off at mile 15 and did not realize it until we got to the trail head. Rode with Jim T, Bob and Roscoe. Temps were a little chilly at the start but quickly warmed up as we rode.

Nice casual ride with John and Mary to PB where we met Ralph and Sandy for coffee. After coffee Sandy headed for home and the rest of us rode out to Wayside and then headed for home. Beautiful day for riding today with temps in the 70s.

Fantastic ride with The Florida Freewheelers to Disneys Wild Animal Kingdom.

The ride was fantastic with Gilberto leading the way and getting us into all of the places that the rest of America was paying for. We averaged about 16 mph for the 30 mile trip down and 15.3 mph for the 20 mile return trip into a very strong head wind I might add.

I got spit off the back at about the 40 mile mark but with the help of Mr. Garmin I got a couple of us back to the starting point. Head winds and hills are not my friend. On the way down we took a short break at the Contemporary Hotel, and It looked like a mass invasion with about 40 cyclist rolling right into the lobby.

We had lunch at the Sanaa Restaurant at the Wild Animal kingdom Lodge. We were entertained by Gilberto and one of the hostesses playing on African Bongo drums. Lunch was very good, I had the Tandoori Shrimp sandwich and it was excellent.

The weather could not have been better, well a little less wind would have been nice, but hey we live in Florida and we are going to have wind. Gilberto deserves a big than you for putting all of this together. I can't wait until we do it again in the fall. The animals need a bid thank you as well for there cooperation. Photos to follow. I don't and don't care how many calories were in the lunch I had because I burned 1900 on the ride.

Its been a week since my heart cath so I could ride today My wrist didn't bother me at all. No surprise there.
Rode from Hernando to the north end of the trail and back. My wife told me not to overdo it so I only rode 22 miles.
Even with the wind my ride time was faster than its been in quite a while. Nice to be able to ride "hard" without having to warm up and drop back when my angina acted up.

Good ride with Roscoe, Ralph and Bob this morning. The sky was overcast but no rain to be found, however we had head winds up to 20 mph out of the north going out. Roscoe had a doctors appointment at 10:30 so he left us at Panera Bread, Ralph and Bob and I finished the ride.

Super ride this morning with John and Mary on the bus (tandem bike) and Linda P. Met Ralph and Sandy at Panera Bread for coffee and bagels then rode out to Wayside then Sylvan Lake and out to Fox Spur. Averaged 15 mph for the first 30 miles then the head winds started to take control (gusts up to 20 mph from the SW). Nice calorie burn this morning but now I will eat everything in sight. On the way home we picked up Bob and Bud so we had a nice pace line on Markham Woods Road. Riding behind John and Mary on the tandem is like riding in a vacuum. It was nice to have Linda back riding after a couple of months off the bike. Today was very cloudy but no rain.

A little on the chilly side when Tina and I met John B and Roscoe and Mary at the trail head at 9 am this morning for a ride to the Swamp House Grill. We picked up Ralph along the way and headed for Panera Bread for coffee. It was nice and comfortable at PB so we stayed a little longer than normal. After forcing ourselves to leave the warmth of PB we decided to just do Fox Spur instead. The wind was gusting to 20 mph from the north so the ride up International was a little harder than normal. We turned west on Wilson then Sylvan Lake to the trail head while Roscoe, Ralph Tina and John B continued on out to Fox Spur then picked Mary Jared and I up on the way back. The temperature is still only 64 degrees at 1:15 pm.

Between the rain, doctor appts for my wife or me, and company (we're having more tomorrow and Wednesday ) I haven't been keeping up my mileage.
Got out today and rode from Hernando to the north end of the trail and then south to the red caboose and finally back to Hernando, for a total of 33 miles. Before my heart was holding me back. Now my lack of miles is holding me back. Hope I'll be back to "normal" in a few more weeks.

Good ride with Carl, Jim T, John and Bob. The 21 mile segment from Panera Bread to Panera Bread we averaged 15.4 mph. Jared joined in om the return ride for a few miles. It's good to have Carl ride with us as it tends to push us a little harder. Roscoe is getting stronger every day, might need to do a brake adjustment on his back wheel to keep him under control.

The B&B is closed again. My brother and sister-in-law visited earlier this week and I had my first cardiac rehab session yesterday so today was ride day. First time since last Saturday. Rode from Hernando to the north end of the trail and then south to Inverness and then back to Hernando for a total of 33 miles. Gotta get these visitors to stay away and get my dr stuff scheduled better. Its all cutting into my riding schedule.

Very good ride this morning , started with Bob, Jim T, and Roscoe at the trail head then picked up Ralph at E. E. Williamson. Rich joined us for coffee and bagels at Panera Bread then we headed out International Parkway to the horse farms. Roscoe left us at the Wayside turn due to some work commitments. After a short break at the HFs we then headed to Fox Spur then to the Markham trail Head for a short break. Our 24 mile segment from PB to PB we averaged 15.73 mph even with a pretty strong head wind.

On Sunday I rode the Felt from Hernando to Ft Cooper, then headed north. I got to Holder and threw in the towel. For some reason I just couldn't make it to the north end. Turned around and slowly headed to Hernando.

Today I did the same ride on the Litespeed. Didn't have any problems and rode to the north end before turning around and heading for Hernando.

So now I have to decide what adjustments to make to the Felt. It just hasn't seemed as comfortable as the Litespeed lately.
I stopped in Inverness Bicycle and Fitness today and talked with Sherry about a CAAD 10 3. I've wanted a Cannondale since 2008.
If I can't get the Felt to feel good again I guess the verdict will be that my body just doesn't like compact frames. The Felt is the 3rd compact frame I've had. The first was a CX bike so I really can't compare it to a road bike. The second was the 2010 Specialized Tarmac Elite that I began disliking after 6 months and sold it after 9 months.
The Felt was recommended by a Felt riding friend in Atlanta. Its been comfortable until recently. So I suppose its bike fitting time.
If I can't get it feeling good it may go on the auction block (Ocala craigslist and Ocala4sale . com) and I'll be testing riding a CAAD 10 3 or CAAD 10 5.
The never ending quest continues.

Ron, before I did anything, I'd get the tape measure out and start checking. Given the same pedals, saddle, and bars on both bikes, (which they should be ... more on that below), all measurements should be identical. Even though the seat and head tube angle may vary, that just affects how the bike handles. YOU haven't changed, you just changed bikes, so your reach to the bars, your leg extension, and your saddle to bar height differential should all be the same.

Start by checking the saddle height from the pedal axle. Next, drop a plumb line from your saddle nose past the cranks, and check to see that the distance from the crank center is the same on both bikes. If not, move your saddle fore or aft, then start measuring all over again. Saddle positioning is like flying a helicopter, i.e., a single adjustment affects every other adjustment.

A common mistake, especially when riding the same saddle/seatpost combo, is the assumption that setting the saddle up according to the marks is going to give you the same position on this bike that it gave you on your other bike. It MAY, but it also may not. Head tube and seat tube angles vary widely and will affect all that. So you start with a plumb line.

Once you get the saddle position to perfectly mimic your "comfortable" bike in both height and relation to the cranks, go from there. Measure the reach, (distance from the saddle nose to the bars). Then check the saddle to bar differential, (the height difference between the saddle and the bars. This one's a bit tougher, but I use a level resting on the saddle nose and drop a tape measure to the bars). Stems can be bought not only in varying length, but in degree of rise, as well. A new stem may be necessary.

Once you have all these measurements correct, YOU should be comfortable. The bike, on the other hand, will still be the bike. The differences between aluminum, Ti, carbon and steel will be more amplified by the fact that you're in your perfect riding position.

Now, as promised, a word on saddles, bars and pedals. As a tandem, single and fixie rider of over 40 years, I learned a long time ago that if you find a saddle that's truly comfortable for you, buy 20. That will be enough to outfit all your bikes, and keep you in new saddles for about a decade or more. (Because, according to that little bastard Irishman Murphy, as soon as you find a saddle you like, the manufacturer modifies it or quits making it altogether). Same with bars. (Pedals aren't quite so trendy.)

Obviously, I'm a BIG fan of riding the same saddle, bars, and pedals on all the bikes in the fleet. No excuses. You have three points of contact with the bike, and they should all feel the same. The average person can have a MAJOR problem getting comfortable on a new bike. So, if you've EVER dialed in a bike to be comfortable for you, it just makes sense to mimic it.

Super ride this morning with a great group. Jim T, John (Roscoe) L, Carl Ralph and Bob and it was really nice to have Brenda back riding with us also. It looks like summer is here its 85 degrees, high humidity and 20 mph head winds. The weather for Saturdays ride to the coast does not look to promising and we need to get this ride in the books before the temps get into the 90s. We will have about 50 miles of open riding and no shade after we hit Osteen.

Hot ride to the horse farms by SloSpoke at Garmin Connect - Details

No ride today - just an update.
My wife and I stopped by the bike shop yesterday and she gave me the go-ahead to get the CAAD 10 3 or 10 5. But before I spend $2000-3000 I thought I'd compare bikes and make a few adjustments.
Two big things were different. The cranks aren't the same. I always assumed they were both 175 since both bikes are 56cm. The Litespeed has 175 and the Felt has 172.5. I guess compact means shorter cranks along with smaller chainrings.
I swapped stems and put the original 100mm stem back on the Felt. I replaced it with a 90mm when the bike was less than a year old. At the time the shorter stem seemed more comfortable.
Went thru all the measurements and now everything is the same on both bikes.
Tomorrow I'll find out if the adjustments helped. Doing the same route as the last two rides.

Do keep in mind, Ron, that even if it does help that's NO reason to tell the wife! You already have the approval for the Cannondale, and there's NO SUCH THING as too many bikes!
