2008 Brasstown Bald Buster Century
Registration is open....not that it's filled up in the past like Mt Mitchell and others, but if you need a little extra motivation (as do I) to get on the bike and drop 30 pounds now's the time.

See ya'll there....and I'm finishing this year.

I'd love to ride it, but a little too expensive for me. I guess they have to shuttle you back down Brasstown Bald, but bus rides and bike transport aren't that expensive. $105 for this one.

It is pricey. They take excellent care of your bike if you're fortunate enough to make it to the top. The post ride meal as well as the SAG's are very nice as well.

It's funny this got posted here today. I just got finished spending some time looking for a century in GA & definitely found this one most intriguing. However, looking at some of the results almost half the field doesn't finish?? I am afraid I would have to regear my bicycle. I have a compact but don't know if I am geared low enough to climb 15 & 20% grades! It is looks cool but brutal.

The real brutal climb is Hogpen Gap and one of the factors that make it so tough is that it doesn't come until ~mile 80.....and the first 80 are a lot more hilly than anything that can be taken lightly. It's a great ride to try. Well laid out route, decent sags, and the scenery is really something for a flatlander like me. You really need to train a lot if you plan on attempting the whole shebang, otherwise you're just pissing away your money. I think it's got a chance to really fill up more this year because it's not on the same weekend as 6 gap or 3 state.
It's a ton of fun and well worth the attempt. See you there if you decide on going,
Michael

I just signed up. I was glad to see that the date was moved to May 17th – I had heard that they were thinking of doing if in June.
Warning: when signing up online with active.com (the only way they let you register) beware of offers of “free” stuff – read the fine print, bearing in mind that they have your credit card number.

Good point about Active.com. They pulled a few shenaniganny things with mine last year that I wasn't too pleased with.
I thought last year that Mitch said it was going to be in June at the ride start. Regardless, I'm glad to see it move a couple of weeks out. Maybe I won't have to bundle up at the start just to carry the stuff the rest of the day.
Cheers,
Michael

I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger and joining you guys. If you can finish this thing, it looks like a huge accomplishment.

I just checked out the results from last year and a couple of guys from town finished 5th and 7th. They were a little faster at Mitchell but the group stays together longer on that ride I would think. Knowing them as I do those times are a good comparison for me since I have done Mitchell 3 times.

I just signed up. I did it last year and I had a great time. Sign up now and pay less.
I rode it with a compact crank and managed to finish. A triple would have made it easier but it isn't required.

**UPDATE**
Greetings,
For those of you that participated in the 2007 Brasstown Bald Buster Century, I???m sure you notice the Georgia Public TV film crew along the route. They were busy capturing the event, and the strenuous effort put forth by you as you tackled the course. The episode of Georgia Outdoors featuring the Brasstown Century will air this Tuesday at 7:30 pm (2/12/08).
After watching the show, head over to www.BrasstownBaldBusterCentury.com and register for the 2008 edition of the century!
One last word, next Saturday (2/16/08) is the 6th edition of the Tundra Time Trial, the inaugural cycling race of the season. The weather appears to be great for the event this year for you to test your pre-season fitness. The highs for the day are currently forecasted to be in the 60s! The trophies are as amazing as any other year. You can register online at www.Active.com . Be sure to hurry, online registration ends this Thursday!
Keep those cranks turnin???
Jim and Mitch

Do it by yourself or with some friends and ride back into Dahlonega for a beer or two.
Hogpen Gap, IMO, is harder than Brasstown. It's just unrelentless.

Hogpen is definitely tough. Just about the time you think you are done it dips down then smacks you in the face with more climbing.

Neels --
The toughest Gap of the Six is Neels gap, in the late afternoon, in August. ;-)
The full sun toward the top and heat are a total smack-down. You must be one skinny-fella cause comparing the 20%+ on the Brasstown wall to Hogpen south side that runs ~10%, aren't even in the same category in my book, IMO.
Some of you might have seen the new Google map terrain feature, well here's what Hogpen looks like:
https://atlbike.org/index.php?module=...2_itemId=18364
This is the link to the thumbnail. The image this links to can expand to a full 1059x824 resolution.
I didn't know that the backside of Hogpen was in Lordamercy Cove. I think we might have a new name for the backside of Hogpen as that's a good description of the feeling I got the first time I looked down it. ~11% straight down, 1 mile.

Alright - we are week out from the event. Who is going? What are you wearing? How long are you planning on letting me hang on your rear wheel?
I am driving down from South Carolina that morning & planning on wearing a Blue & White jersey from a Wheels on Meals charity event.
