Group rides in Naples, FL

Anybody know of any group rides in Naples?

Script 07-15-08 07:48 PM

There's a bike shop in the strip mall just north of Pelican Bay. I think it's called the Pavilion Shops. The bike store is the Naples Cyclery and they have organized rides. Stop in and check it out. I've not participated in any of their rides but I see them on the road.
There's also a store called The Bike Route on Tamaimi Trail about 7th Ave. north that, I believe, provides route maps but I'm not sure about rides.
Right now I'm in Indiana but will be back in Naples later this month. I ride every day, sometimes twice during the time of year without pm storms. Great place to ride once you get familiar with the area and the senior citizen driving styles.

There is also a new Trek store in Naples. They are organizing some rides. You can find them easily on the web.

Another group is Naples Velo. You can find their info at naplesvelo.com.

Re: Script's opinion: "this is a great place to ride"

On the contrary, the Naples area is just about the worst place in the world for cycling. I can't wait to get the hell out of here. Just check out some of the other posts in the forum, or look up the cycling fatality statistics. I suppose if you like:

1. riding where there are almost no bike lanes and no shoulders
2. old motorists pulling out in front of you every quarter of a mile and uncontrollaby swerving into your space
3. middle-aged motorists (mostly females in H2s and other "cool" SUVs) side swiping you while they chat away on their cell phones
4. young motorists (and middle-aged males) running you off the road, riding your ass and honking at you repeatedly because you aren't on the sidewalk (when they have only three car lanes to choose from)
5. the monotony of riding sixty miles in which you encounter only one hill - a freeway overpass that rises a daunting 40 feet!
6. humidity

then, yeah, Naples is a great place to ride.

jpk, If you need therapy, try something other than bike forums.

Yes, it is hot and humid...it's South Florida.
Yes, there are no hills...what a surprise.
Bad drivers...they're everywhere.
No bike lanes...if you go to the VC forum, you'll find that bike lanes are the bane of 'real' bikers. On the other hand, there are many bike lanes in the Naples area, you just have to find them.

If you hate it so much...leave.

Whoa, someone's a little bit touchy about their opinions.

In other words, "Yes, it sucks riding in South Florida ..."

Thanks for the advice. You can count on me leaving asap. Unfortunately, my entire life doesn't revolve around my cycling routes.

Florida and Naples areas have some great rides - personally I could care less if there's a bike lane or not as long as there's enough room for a car to pass without running me off the road. In place where that is the case, that route just isn't used by this one any more.

Several place you can try....
Don't need a group ? - http://www.mapmyride.com/find-ride/u...ates/fl/naples

Trek Store Tamiami Trail - http://trekbikesflorida.com/page.cfm?pageID=68

Naples Cyclery - Check the Group Ride tab http://naplescyclery.com/

Need more - try Adventure cycles - http://www.adventurecycling.org/cyp/...orida&f=lState

Good luck
