West Virginia road cycling?

Is it possible to ride in WVa without getting killed on those narrow, shoulderless, cars moving at 55mph, roads. I just got back from a short vacation in WVa around the New River. While there I scouted some potential roads. And aside from the back roads, any State routes would be suicide to ride on. I was looking at Rt.39 and there is no way one could ride on that without getting killed. Some of the back roads seemed OK except for all of the climbing you'd be doing.
