Cross Va ride- East 2 West - Need Advice

    Hello to All,

I'm planning a ride from Gloucester(near yorktown) to Staunton for this summer. I want to do this ride in 3 days, staying at hotels in the Ashland and Charlottesville areas. I have considered the Adventure cycling route, and I'm sure it's a nice route, but it sure does seem to take the long way across the state. I have what I think is a good route planned out from Gloucester to Ashland, but getting from there to the Charlottesvile area is what I'm not so sure about. I'm considering taking Rt. 250 from just west of Richmond to near Charlottesville. It looks very direct, but may not be very biker friendly. Any thoughts or experiences on getting from Richmond to Cville would be much appreciated.

    Brian

250 is pretty busy between Richmond and Charlottesville, but I like biking the 250 bypass that goes around downtown Charlottesville to the north.

I mapped out a route for a friend of a friend riding from DC to Williamsburg back in April. He said it worked well for biking. Here is the last leg of it, Ashland to W'burg.

If you can get to West Point you can follow it in reverse. Route 30 might also work.

Can't help with Ashland to C'ville, unless you want to ride by way of Warrenton and Culpepper.

I may need to drive up to rt. 250 to see what's really like, if not, the alternative is to use the adventure cycling route between richmond and c'ville.

Thanks for the map from williamsburg to ashland. I'll be on rt. 30, north of that route. Whatever route I take, I need to head-up to the mts. and get some miles in.....living by the bay doesn't do much for the climbing legs.
