New to Nashville
Hi everyone! I just arrived on Sunday from Massachusetts, and I'd like to start getting to know the riding seen around my new city. I'm basically a roadie/road racer, looking for some good local routes, folks to ride with, good group rides. Ultimately, I might want to join one of the local racing teams, though I intend to spend some time "on the market" at first. I'll probably join the Vanderbilt cycling team straight off (I'm a grad student at Vandy), but that doesn't start up for another month and half or so. I'm used to riding in a very rural environment, so riding in the city is pretty weird at the moment. I'm hoping to get out of town, but I have to admit that I'm pretty afraid of getting lost at the moment. I've found NashvilleCyclist.com, which has a lot of useful information, but it doesn't seem terribly up-to-date and it would be nice to talk to local riders in person.
Suggestions, links, greetings are welcome! Thanks.

Hey Grolby,
Welcome to Nashville. Yeah nashvillecyclist.com hasnt' been up to date for a while. Tim Hall is the guy who runs it and I think he's just not focusing as much on the website anymore. Have you made it out to the criteriums on Wednesday nights yet? If not you can find the info on nashvillecyclist.com but in general there are crits at the Titans stadium in the parking lot starting around 5;45 pm on Wednesday nights. There aren't a ton of group rides around here especially this time of the year when everyone seems to just be racing. Once race season is over Tim will start the "Be There or Get Slower" rides back up which most of the racers do.
As far as routes, if you live close to campus it is a short ride to Percy Warner Park which has multiple loops to ride (5.9 miles and 10.9 miles I believe). That is my normal route...do about 10 miles to the park and then the long loop and then 10 miles home. Also there is some great riding out near Leiper's Fork as well as out on river road. Have you tried mapmyride.com?
I've been a member of the Vandy Cycling team the past two years however a masters thesis and a hurt hip have kept me from racing with them. This past year it fizzled out a little bit so I'm not sure what the turnout for the team will be next year.
I too am a grad student at Vandy so give me a shout if you have anymore questions.
Chris

Yeah, I've made it out to the Wednesday crit series - did race #2 this past week, and I hope to line up for most of them over the rest of the summer, as well as the Coliseum Criterium in two weeks. I was pretty wiped out last week, but still managed a decent finish with a smart sprint, and apparently I'm in 11th place in the series points standings as a result. I think that the top 5 is out of reach, especially since I'll miss at least one more race in August, but aiming to get inside the top 10 will be a nice motivation for the summer, I think. I'll check out the BGTS rides once they roll around.
I've already been out to Percy Warner a couple of times - it's just a short jaunt down West End and Belle Meade - but haven't fully explored it yet. I did just today discover Page Rd, which is beautiful and all too short. I'm hoping to keep getting further out. I have heard about Leiper's Fork, and also Old Natchez Trace. I'm just starting to look at stuff on mapmyride.com, but am not sure how to tell good routes from bad just yet!
As for the team, well, I'll have to see what happens, but I'm hoping to get back into the collegiate race scene, if at all possible. It would be a shame if the club has fizzled out to that great an extent. The collegiate season is a good way to get in some early season racing miles, and racing in March should be a lot more comfortable in the South than it was up North! I'll definitely let you know if I have more questions, maybe I'll see you around.
