Groups in Atlantic beach/Morehead area?
My wife and I are just starting to get into Bicycling, well she is fresh. Best bike she ever had was Walmart Schwinn. I grew up on a Gitane. I just purchased a 06 Cannondale Caad8 Sprint and am getting bored riding on Cherry Point Marine base. I normally ride 10 miles a night, but would like to get into more like 15-30 mile rides. Wanting to know if there are any groups in the area that go on weekend rides, or even weekday rides. Very new to the area and don't really like the traffic on HWY 70. Anyone have any sugguestions?

Don't know about groups, but you can ride down emerald isle (bike lane the whole way) or drive to Swansboro. From there you can do the swansboro centennial loop, about 25 miles. Very nice, scenic, low traffic, good variety of terrain (considering where you are located). Traffic the along NC24 leg is an issue, but it's only a few miles and drivers have plenty of room to pass you. The bike store in cedar point just before swansboro has info on the loop, so does google.
Also, I've never done it, but I believe hwy. 70 east of beaufort going towards the cedar island ferry is very lightly traveled. It's probably 50-60 miles round trip however.

I've actually been posting this same question for the last 18 months or so and the best I got was nothing... There are people out there riding. I've been told there are a lot of people in Morehead that ride, but I guess they just don't post. I live over in Beaufort and ride a lot in the town here but when I'm looking to do mileage I go over the bridges and ride down to EI or I take my bike over to Fort Macon and ride from there out and back to EI. There are group rides in Jacksonville if you're interested in driving, I've been told, but I'm just not interested in driving, whole job thing limits my time for that. Hopefully more people in the area will start posting and we can get some groups together.

Here is a link to a thread where Norskagent gave a suggestion for a ride in that area. I have done the ride and it was great.

Guess I coulda posted that I would be interested in joining ya, work permitting, and doing a ride.. I've never ridden with a group but I've really looked forward to it.. I guess if we get enough small groups to start seeing each other we might work towards a big group.. that would be nice..

Deffinately, How is the traffic dealing with them in the Fort Macon Atlantic beach area? I only ask as I have never ridden in a city before, growing up as a kid I road places where I would see 5 cars in my entire 20 mile ride. Currently my wife is in the Coast Guard and she works at Fort Macon CG station. I just do a 10 mile ride on the nights she is home and I am able to get out. But my 10 mile ride is a bike path here on base at Cherry Point. Im deffinately intersted though!

Fort Macon/AB area pretty much depends on what the tourists are doing. For the most part 99% of the people on the road are courteous. Hwy 58 is nice with a decent shoulder for you to ride on. There is traffic but during the winter time is dramatically decreased as compared to busy summers. I would tell you to head over to the Bike Depot and see about group rides, since there is a 'board' there, but I've never seen anyone post a ride but you could give it a shot. If you live in Havelock you might as well look at New Bern as well. I hear there are a few people there and ,the New Bern Century Cyclists, if they still exists. I would stay away from Morehead city on your bike if you can. I only use it when I go from Beaufort over to AB. Arendell street isn't very bike friendly from 25th street on up, but it is fine from 1st to 25th. Hope this helps and maybe we can figure out a ride or something..
