    Highlands Bike Fest December 10-12

Anybody here planning on the Highlands Bike Fest at the Kenilworth Lodge in Sebring, Fl December 10-12? All you folks in Florida complaining about riding in the city ought to check us out. Rides from 12 to 30 to 60 to 100 miles on well marked routes (Our local club marks the roads) with rest stops and SAG support out in the country with safe roads and light traffic that is relatively Bike friendly. Details at www.Kenilworthlodge.com. I plan to do my first Century that weekend.

For all you folks that conquered the Horrible Hundred our 100 will be a peace of cake. We've got a few little hills but nothing like Sugarloaf mountain. To keep the 100 within Highlands county we ride through Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid with a loop around Lake Istapoga which takes us out to Lorida. Since our numbers are usually below 500 we don't have the massive crowd to get through at the start.

Check out our club website at HighlandsPedalers.com

I'll be one of the people at the back of the pack trying to finish the 100 in less than 8 hours

Oh man, I just searched this site for "Highland Bike Fest" and nothing came up, so I posted a new thread to find out if anyone else is riding!! But, YES! I'm arriving Friday afternoon and riding Sat/Sun but not the Century. I've been off the bike for many years and just now getting back into it. Did a 31 mile ride last weekend and my "nether regions" didn't appreciate it. Simple chafing issues. My legs and lungs were just fine. I'll probably do the Saturday 51 and Sunday 29. I ride an old Cannondale H300 hybrid with the CAD1 frame so I'm going to keep it easy for now. Would like to meet you there just so I'll know somebody!

The easiest way to find info on the event is www.kenilworthlodge.com. Members of our local club will be manning the registration desk so if you ask how to find the old fat guy named Red who rides the red and white Lemond Buenos Aires someone will point me out. This event last year was the first even I'd ever attended, I just started riding last year, I saw my odometer turn 50 miles for the first time but went home with a really sore behind. Now that I have 4000 miles on that saddle I'm in less pain and I've help mark the routes for the events three times so I'm less ignorant than I was last year.

Our roads don't have the mountains of Clermont and for the most part our routes go through pretty back roads with very little traffic and spending a couple of days in a neat old hotel filled with cyclists is kinda fun.

    See you there Tim.

My daughter and I are thinking about the Sunday 60 mile ride. Are there any on line course maps or Q sheets available? We are Team Slo Spokes, look for us and say hello.

Look at our club website www.highlandspedalers.com the routes showing there are similar to the ones from the Kenilworth. They of course will give out maps and cue sheets when you register. I understand they've made new ones for this years event but I haven't seen them yet. Even down here in the middle of nowhere roads and conditions change over time. One of the roads we finally abandoned because we had so many complaints about how rough it was. As soon as one of my mentors re drew the route and printed the new maps and cue sheets the county paved the road. Now it's the smoothest road in the county but it's not on any of our routes
I'll watch for you. The only thing I have in common with most of our club members is the jersey. I usually watch them fade from site as they speed ahead.

    Hey, Red,

I am planning on coming down for the century ride. I want to get an idea of the terrain for the 24 hour ride in Feb. I don't suppose the century runs through or past the racetrack, eh? At least I can get a look at it, anyway. (the 24 is mostly on the track)

Actually the 24 hours starts with one loop around the track then does an 89 mile route along some of the same routes we will be using in two weeks then does an 11 mile loop near the track but staying off the track during the daylight hours because the cars are running then just before dark they return to the track where they stay through the remainder of the race so they are not out on the open roads during the night. I haven't ridden in the 12/24 hour but several of us in our club worked as pit crew for the riders.

Ask for me at the registration desk when you get to the Kenilworth and I'll try to get you more info on the race. I'm going to try to do the century it will be my first.l I started riding in May of last year and last years Bikefest was the first event I ever attended.

Now a year later, I have the gear, the bicycle and I can talk the talk we just have to see if I can ride.

Thanks, Red, I'll look for you there. I'm glad to hear the century route will include the race route, to some extent. I suppose I should get a good idea of the 11 mile loop, too, since that might be 1/3 of the ride or so. I imagine most of the road riding will be flat to rolling, non-threatening. I'm a bit concerned about the track. In google, it looks like a lot of tight turns, although it's probably pretty wide for a bike.

It should be a nice weekend. I am excited to visit Hialeah Racetrack in its rise from the ashes, as well. I never got to see it in the glory days.

I'm sure you can get a century. If you can do 40 miles in a few hours, you can get through 100. Getting a couple hundred calories an hour is the big key, so you don't bonk. And, the more saddle time you have now, the less your bottom will pay later. Also, you don't want to train much in the week prior; you'll only start tired. Your last 5 days might look like: 30, 20, 20, 10, off. good luck.

I'm driving down Sat. morning; it's only a couple hours drive. Then I'll stay over in Miami for the races on Sun.

Since you asked I rode with the guys that organize the 12/24 and I should correct my error. The race starts with 3 laps around the track and then goes into an 89 mile loop (Much of which you will ride on the Highlands Century) The route is posted on Map My Ride (Sebring, Fl page two) Hopefully I will have the updated route at the Kenilworth on Saturday. If the weather lets us we'll be marking routes tomorrow, if not on Sunday. We try not to start more than a week out so our markings will be fresh and clean. My riding buddy says we're vandalizing, going up and down the road with spray paint.

Some of my more patient friends are riding with me Saturday and I'm going to do the century. Hopefully I'll be back to the Hotel before dark

Hey, Red, I missed you out there today. I arrived just in time to roll out (in such a hurry, I even forgot to fill my water!). I got the 100 in a pedestrian 6:30, but, still working back from knee surgery, so I'm just glad to be able to ride right now. The wind was rough in the middle 50 miles; otherwise a great ride.

So, how did you get on? Finished, I hope. Did you get back in time for to eat? They cut it off a 3. I imagine they had a wedding reception or something tonight.

I also got to check out the Sebring Racetrack--awesome! I love to watch racing, and they had all kinds of cars out there practicing. It made me want to come back for the 12 hour road race. The track is pretty wide, so no issue for bikes. The issue is me getting faster.

I hope everything went well for you out there today.

Yes, I finished my first century in a little over 7 hours. Sorry, we missed one another. Three of my friends and I took off a little early because we knew it would take us awhile. It was the first century for two of us and the winds were not kind until the last 25 miles. We struggled going east into Lake Placid and around Lake Istapoga but when we turned west on 98 the wind just blew us home.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Get in touch before the 12/24 several of the locals (including Jim, the mechanic at the Kenilworth) will be working as pit for our people and offering help to whoever needs it.

Today, I'm riding the short ride and helping check people into the lunch line. (the things old fat guys do for a free meal)

Hey Red!! It was great to meet you and finally get a chance to chat a bit. Sorry my wife and I had to leave so abruptly but my stomach was bothering me a bit. Sorry too I couldn't find you after the start of today's 31. The fog in the air and on my glasses removed any chance of reading jersey numbers! Your club and the Kenilworth Lodge did a FANTASTIC job of hosting this weekend event!! Very well supported and well marked. I"m gonna try and hold off on doing my first century until the next time this event comes around, or perhaps for the Tour of Sebring Labor Day weekend 2010.

Anyway, CONGRATS on completing your first century!!! Well done!!

    Tim
