last time I was on it, it was gravel, at least up near blowing rock.
Blowing rock to Lenoir would be mostly fast descending for the first half of the trip I would think.

I'm not sure about the 'globe road'. I was in Blowing Rock two weeks ago for the start of the Cycle North Carolina Ride. The road I drove into town was the highway from Lenoir to Blowing Rock, and a pretty good section of it was under construction. It looked like a large rock slide or land slide had taken out part of the road, and they were rebuilding. The route we took on the bikes from Blowing Rock to Lenoir included a climb up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, the parkway for about 10 miles, and off that Linville Falls. Then a long (11 mile) downhill section to Lenoir. It was GRAND! I was hitting 40+ on my Catrike on some of the long downhill sections.

You came up Hwy 321 from Lenoir to BR. The way I've gone from Lenoir to BR is what you described. Don't think about riding 321 on a bike right now.

BRP to Hwy 181. Hwy 181 down to Adako Rd. TL onto Adako. Take a couple back roads from there. Its about 50 miles.

I'm not familiar with Globe Rd.

TT, It appears from your description you drove up 321 from Lenior to Blowing Rock. No rockslide, that was residuals from blasting. They are in a multiyear project trying to take the mountains out of the mountains and make a straight 4 lane into Boone. Last I heard the project might be stalled for awhile due to funding issues from the state and the last few miles will remain a 2 lane windy entrance to Blowing Rock.

To the OP: I haven't been on the Globe Road in many years. Parts were gravel between Blowing Rock and Lenior way back then, but they may be paved now. Traveling the Globe Road was always like reaching back 100 years. Very remote territory and inhabitants. Seemed like a society lost in the hills between Lenior and Blowing Rock.

Sorry to bump a 4 year old thread, but I couldn't find anything else on this area. I'm planning a BRP tour from Asheville to Little Switzerland to Blowing Rock to Morganton (in-laws live there). Obviously the first 2 segments are all on the BRP, but I'm trying to figure out a good route to get from Blowing Rock to Morganton. Is Globe Rd still gravel? Is it passable on a road bike, or is there a good alternate route for us to take? If possible, I'd rather not backtrack on the parkway and I'd like to avoid 321--I climbed it a few years ago and hated the traffic.

Thanks!

The first eight miles were well maintained, graded and modern gravel. Still like this in 2013. At the intersection of Globe and NC90 the road is paved all the way to Lenoir. Should be okay for a road bike.
