I'm getting nowhere with a Bike Forum admin here. If you think DC should be listed as part of either the Southeast or the Northeast Discussion, please weigh in on the discussion.

Just my opinion, but I believe it should just be same as it always was in the east. Use the Mason-Dixon line - North of it is Northeast, south of it Southeast. any states split by it, majority of geographic mass. This of course would open other cans of worms in movement of other states to either Northeast or Southeast just to align themselves to this split.


The other option - DC isn't a state, leaving it where it is in no-man's land has its own merits.

If you read the referred-to post, I go into (with some pseudo indigination) how miffed people in DC are about not having rights as a 580,000 citizen no-mans land.

Why not put DC in either region? Because DC riders would never find it there. Honestly, DC is a long way from the Mason-Dixon line, but if we are going to use that as a boundary, MD should go Southeast as well, which is fine with me. A large percentage of MD residents live in the greater DC area. I don't think many Marylanders think they are living in the Northeast, but they probably don't think they are in the south either.

The Mason-Dixon Line does not split any state. DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania should be separated into a Mid-Atlantic Forum.

Everyone knows that DC is part of the Bos-Wash megapolis. (The southern edge of which is now closer to Fredericksburg, VA than to the District.)

Besides, every Southerner knows that those north of the Potomac are "Yankees".

As for DC being a "long way from the Mason-Dixon" line: only someone with a northeastern's view of "distance" would think that. 400 miles is a long way -- 60 is not.

As for a mid-Atlantic forum: have you people ever bothered to notice how FEW people view the Northeastern and/or Southeastern forum as compared to SoCal and NorCal? I am not an Admin nor an Owner nor a Sponsor of "BikeForums", but there appears to be a lack of critical mass.

Finally, if you move the dividing line, then what? The people along the new dividing line are likely to feel "between". The whole thing seems pointless whining. If you don't like the categorization here, start your own forum.

With that logic we should leave all sorts of states out. Florida isn't really the South. Texas: Southern or Western? Jeez Missouri is kinda Mid-Western and kinda Southern; leave 'em out. Borders happen. DC shouldn't be left out.

skiffrun, in case you haven't noticed, the most active thread in this regional subforum is about DC. "K street traffic" with almost 6000 views in only nine months.

Do you realize that DC is not included in either region when you suggest the lines remain as drawn?

Bicycling Magazine recently named DC as the third best US city for bicycling after Portland and Boulder.

Marion Barry is no longer mayor but he is a city councilman - one of the 14 paid, elected officials from the District. He and about 10 of the other elected officails are a major reason we don't have a voting congressman or 2 senators. Our "congressional delegate" just had another chance to get a vote in the House blow up on her.

Make a separate DC forum. It's not a state, it should at least get its own forum here.

Either that or make a Mid-Atlantic forum. However, New Jersey should definitely NOT be in the Mid-Atlantic Forum. That's Northeast.

Sadly, I live in DC and don't really know what region it belongs in. I always thought of DC as being in the North, but it's commonly classified in the Southeastern area. Wherever it belongs, I'd just like to know where to go to look for topics related to biking in the DC metropolitan area. Point me in the right direction!

The problem of not knowing where to look is the problem we're trying to solve. DC isn't listed presently as part of any regional discussion. So, please just vote for whichever to give DC a forum.

how in the hell is maryland/DC part of the southeast? I don't understand the argument at all. If you are from the south (i grew up on the gulf coast and now live in Nashville) you classify Alabama, mississippi, Ga, Louisiana, Tn, and south Carolina as the south east. only parts of florida count (those close to the alabama and georgia borders). maryland is no where near the southeast.

Since VA is classified in the SE Regional Discussion and DC isn't in stated to be in any Regional Discussion, some DC posts have ended up in the SE Regional Discussion.

The open question is whether DC should be included in any forum. It is now not officially mentioned as part of a forum. (The open question is not whether to start a Mid Atlantic Forum.) We have no home. Please vote whether DC should be included in the existing NE or SE forurm.

DC has gone from worst to best in regards to biking, although it was always the best on a blue sky cherry blossom peak day and it's still the worst when some idiot soldier from the midwest backs his gigantic military truck over you.

Regardless of how it rates as a cycling city, DC is kind of an important place to be left completely off the map! Seriously, how did this happen?

The Giro will be here next year. Put us in Europe.

sorry Rob but the mods need to create a whole new region: Mid-Atlantic to include Maryland, Delaware, DC and Virginia. It simply makes sense. This geographic area does not identify with either of the current areas.
