heads up for GA gap riders

GA 348, Richard Russell Scenic Highway has some road repairs going on on the north/Union County side. There is s stretch of new asphalt by the big rock wall and many strip patches going down the very steep north bound side. There bumpy transitions, loose gravel and asphalt debris and even some oily patches.

Please go down this stretch slower than usual. I know flying down that hill is fun, but it will be dangerous as hell until they get it cleaned up. You need to start out slow and keep your speed in check all the way as it is steep enough on the pitch below Tesnatee Gap that brakes would do little good if you are already going real fast.

Ride with care.

Hogpen is open now... Supposedly...

"May 21, 2010 -- Great news! We have just confirmed with the Georgia Department of Transportation that Hogpen Gap (SR-348/Richard Russell Pkwy) has re-opened. The road suffered damage from the ice and snow storms this past winter and had been closed since March. The Six Gap Century & Three Gap Fifty Bike Ride will proceed as normal.

open but still rough

The road is officially open, but they are still working and the rough pavement issues I warned about are still present. I think they may do some major repaving soon.

The road was officially closed for months, but people were going around the barricades. The road was not really dangerous at posted speed for cars. I'm sure it was nice for bikes as there was very little traffic. Mostly local folks who know the road was passable.
