Routing assistance please? Nashville area to Memphis area

Hi. I'm planning a ride from the north end of the Natchez Trace Parkway southwest of Nashville, TN to the Mississippi River Trail in West Memphis, Arkansas/Memphis, TN area.

I've looked at mapmyrides and googlemaps as well as others which has given me a basic route. Unfortunately, these tools don't REALLY give great info on such things as shoulder width, traffic levels or rumble strips on the shoulder area. I've also taken a look at the TDoT site and gotten a bit of help there.

Any suggestions or comments, especially on current/upcoming road construction on potential routes would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you have looked at this website it may not help much for you upcoming ride.

You could ride hwy 70 the whole way, the shoulders and traffic will vary along the whole route, but would be a nice route I think.

Thanks for the link. That's one of the potential routes I had identified.
I was hoping someone who lived in the area, in either city or in between might comment - I trust gov't reports about as far as I can throw them. wink

I live in Nashville, and have ridden on parts of 70, and driven a majority of it. I wouldn't have a problem riding on them if it were me.

You could take the Natchez Trace to US64 and then US64 to Memphis. Maybe not as direct as US70 but riding the Trace would be nice.

Thanks for the responses. I've got some more research to do - maybe even routing myself down to Shiloh before heading to Memphis.

Someone has planned a large ride across Tennessee on MapMyRide. Here is the legs between Nashville & Memphis.

Shiloh is only a few miles south of Savannah. If you follow this route you could make a short detour after crossing the Tennessee River to see Shiloh.

I'm tentatively looking at this route:

Originally, I was going to leave right after Labor Day, but I may push this back 2 months due to unforseen circumstances.

Just one small warning. Hwy100 was rumble-striped last year. Basically none of the shoulder in some parts are unusable to bikes. I'm not sure how far they went with it, but most of it in Davidson County was that way the last time I rode out there. Other than that, looks good. Good luck.

Please report on how it goes. My goal is to one day ride from Bristol to Memphis and would definitely like to hear how the route is.

Modified the route to avoid Hwy 100 as much as possible. Thanks for the info about that road.
