I only ask because on my normal ride there are 3 places where there is a little bit of change in the bike lane... So far I haven't stopped to pick it up. But every time I go by It seems to beg me to pick it up.... ahhhhh I think one spot has a dime, nickel & penny. The other spot is a dime I think. And the last spot is a dime & 3 pennies...

On a similar note... Two days ago I saw what looked like a walmart gift card in the bike lane. I didn't stop... tooooo hot.... I didn't ride yesterday but today I saw the same gift card.... I STOPPED walked back and picked it up. I thought about how rich I was going to be when I got home... what I was gonna do with all of the money.. Scratched off that back called for the balance....... ZERO DOLLARS......

Ohhh well great ride today anyway...... Even if I am still poor.....

A little off topic but close enough IMO
Back in the 50s the family was driving up to Cleveland Ohio when my father spotted a wallet laying in the road. He stopped got out of the car and walked back to pick it up. Just as he bent over to pick it up it went flying over into the bushes. Two kids were hiding their and had a string attached to the wallet. My father walked back to the car pretty red faced.

I will pick up anything above a quarter, anything less and I might pick it up on the return trip

I picked up 67 cents on a bike path at the beach once....

Also a bit off topic (of a thread I started LOL) ... But last Mothers day I was taking my mom out to dinner and was backing into a parking spot, kind of looking off to the side as i'm doing so. Freaked my mom out for a second because I THEW the car in park flung my seat belt off hitting the side window with the buckle (which could have been really bad in hindsight).... Jumped out of the car and picked up a $20 bill... NOT in a wallet or anything... We didn't quite have a free dinner but gave us something to talk about for a long time...

Back a few years ago when I was still commuting (pre-retirement days), I was riding on Singleton Rd. and had to cross Jimmy Carter Rd. Every day while waiting for the light to change, about 2 car-lengths back from the intersection I'd see a quarter, 2 nickels, and a penny in road. They had been there so long and had been run over so much that they were pressed into the asphalt. I'd need a knife or screwdriver to pry them up. Way too much traffic there. I guess thats why no one (including pedestrians) ever picked it up.
Its probably gone now. That intersection has been repaved.

No money but I did pick up an 11/12mm open ended wrench on the side of the street. Another tool for the bike!

So far over the years I have picked up a 10mm wrench, pair of craftsman pliers, 2 sockets (cant remember sizes of those). I found another wrench on the way to the Gainesville trail head, I hid the wrench behind a garbage can so that my ride could pick it up while I rode to the other end of the trail. But my ride forgot to pick it up before she came to pick me up at the other end of the trail. So I'm guessing park/trail maintenance got a free wrench. Also not really tools but I have found 3 chain hooks...

Hmm..if I'm in the groove riding, it had better be paper money before I would stop and pick it up. Walking I'd pick up anything but pennies. Haven't seen anything riding that I'd want to pick up or touch at all really. I get tempted to stop and pick up plastic bottles and aluminum cans though. It makes me itch when people don't recycle AND pollute.

I know this is high jacking this thread but I to get very irritated when I see cans and plastic bottles along the trail. I found myself stopping so much to pick the trash up that I bought a kickstand and put on my bike just to keep from laying it down. My rides started to take so long my wife thought that I had left her. I rarely pick up anything now, there is just to much of it. The park service picks up about every two months but that only lasts about a day. I wish people would be more considerate. Now to keep the thread on line I saw a penny the other day and I didn't stop to pick it up.

Ohhh I know what you mean.... Its crazy how much trash/garbage is on the side of the road on my daily ride. They picked up all of the trash one day, cut the grass the next day and the following day there was already trash on the side of the road again. It's just SAD.... And until I started riding I really never noticed how much there is ALL OVER the place. I will say there is hardly any trash on the Gainesville Hawthorne trail, they must pick it up almost daily. The thing that pisses me off the most though is watching somebody throw a cigarette butt on the ground. Weather they put it out or not it pisses me off. The filter takes something like 20yrs to biodegrade. Not to mention the fires we had down here 6 or 7 years ago.

I've ridden over the same nickle, dime, etc. on various routes dozens of times without stopping. To answer the question... it would probably have to be quite a bit. I'm usually in a zone of some kind while climbing or descending too fast in the hilly area where I live.

Some of the other replies make me think of something I used to do as a kid. I used to deliver the downtown paper route in the small Ohio town where I grew up. One winter, as I was working my route on a warmer sunny day and the snow was melting, I noticed an occasional coin laying below the parking meters. People with either gloves on or cold numb fingers would clumsily drop the coins into the snow. On a number of occasions while working my route, I'd also make a circuit of all the meters. On a good day I could pick up a few bucks, enough for a decent candy haul or quite a few free games at the local arcade.

A penny is good for me. Any excuse to stop for a drink in this Florida heat. But when I stop, I'm reminded that it was cooler when riding and regret the break. Next time, it's only going to be for Wheat pennies.

I am the sort of person that picks up any money I find laying around with nobody seeming to own it. Pennies to paper (or please merciful god bags of it) it's all worth picking up. Profit for the day in my book.

I lived in a little town, Salisbury, NC, and had a regular route that brought me home by the local hospital. I usually kind of track stand lights as a habit but something this particular day made me stop and put a foot down to wait on something, I don't remember. I also was out in the intersection more than I normally would have placed my self. I looked down and there were big seams or cracks in the asphalt. You know, where the old concrete road was overcoated with asphalt and it sort of leaves these little canyons from expansion. This seam was chock full of change! I layed my bike down on the side of the road and spent 20 minutes dodging traffic filling the 3 pockets of my jersey. Scooping money out of the road! I have no idea what my neighbors thought but I was somewhere around $14 dollars to the black when I got home.

I still wonder how that change got there.

I don't find cash often enough, but I do check any scratch-off lotto tickets I spot after I ran across a couple of $50+ winners a few years back. Fairly often I'll find a $1-2 winner that somebody didn't think was worth the trouble to cash in.

I'll stop for any coin, even a penny. You never know when it might be something interesting. I've got a "treasure chest" of older or unusual coins which I've found in change over the years.

You know now that you mention it..... I see those ALL OF THE TIME.... Sooooo If I end up stopping 10 times on a ride now its all your fault.... LOL
