Miami - Key West - Miami, route suggestions?

Has anyone done it? I'm planning on doing it on Monday (this is a one-day affair, there and back)

Do you have any suggestions of routes across this section? I was planning on riding through the farms in Homestead (near the black harbor marina) but I'm doubting the wisdom of doing so. The lighting there is nonexistent, and there aren't very many emergency services nearby. The alternative, as far as I can tell, is taking the Busway.

Also, is there anything I should know about moving through the Keys? I was going take Old Card Sound Road into Key Largo, Old State Road something or other, then the Overseas Heritage Trail into Key West.

Well I admire your courage but I doubt your wisdom in planning as this sounds like a spur of the moment adventure. With that said I second Glen's suggestion that you read
Tour De Isidro on /// www.crazyguyonabike..

That is all....well no it isn't either GOOD LUCK....

I'm originally from the Homestead area. The busway won't take you south of... maybe 216th st? You could possibly ride down Krome Ave for a ways. That's out to the west. Riding though Homestead around Black Point would be fine, but from 216-248th streets it's a pretty rough neighborhood.

There's a bike path from the end of the Busway to the place where US-1 and Old Card Sound Road intersect. I think I'll just do that.

Maybe o.O There were a wicked amount of mosquitoes when I was coming into Key Largo. Almost got eaten alive.

Anyway, I didn't make it all the way to Key West. I managed about 10-20 miles past Marathon when I gave up and went back home. By the way, for reference, Avanti73, at Pigeon Key, i believe, it looks like there's a super-convenient second bridge that goes the same way as the main car bridge... it's an old railroad bridge and it's cut in half.

My ride was about 211 miles, which is the farthest I've ever been, so I'm pretty satisfied, but that railroad bridge discovery just infuriated me to the point that I had to start home.

That bridge has been gone a long time and it is different than you would suspect, take a look at this:

http://bridgehunter.com/fl/monroe/marathon-railroad/

Its been gone since I was a kid, second bridge is the old 7 mile bridge, which is cannot be crossed.
