va_cyclist, cool. Doctors don't know everything, but often they think they do. ;-) My knees are happier now that I've been really careful about shifting before I need to. Regular hills are okay it's those ones that are really steep that get me. When I get to that point where I'm still getting too much resistance in 1-1, I'll just stand up and see if that takes care of it.

zzOtherlandzz 08-18-10 05:26 PM

zzOtherlandzz is a sit down and go up the hill kind of bike rider.. LOL If its a short hill i'll stand and try not to lose too much momentum. But on longer ones I'll sit most of time and maybe stand up for a few seconds to stretch the legs. <sigh> Back when I was a weee bit lighter a few years ago I did more standing... Maybe again someday, for now though...... im sittin

Well the bike riding gods are not smiling on me. Went to the emergency room Sat. morning and have been in the hospital since. They can't seem to locate the trouble. They did some deep ct scans today and are going to go deeper tomorrow. The neurologist said he thinks that I might have a small aneurysm (sp). The are going to run PSA test and stomach and intestine tests. The bike riding might be on hold for a while.

I will see you all when I get back...

Keep riding.

kjjc9640 - Hope the "going deeper" doesn't lead to opening you up for surgery. Must be the month for abdominal problems.

After a 45 mile ride on Sat (8/7) had severe cramping on the way home. Cramps got worse, called the ambulance and had surgery the following day to address adhesions from a previous surgery in the intestines. Spent 6 days in the hospital and will have the staples (35) removed later this week. I'm getting impatient and realize it will take some time to get back up to speed once back in the saddle. Hoping to do an easy ride next week.

Wish you the best.

I rode today - - but YESTERDAY was a gully washin', lightnin' booming frog gargler... and I stayed under cover.

Linda N ... Like you told slospoke ... Follow the docs orders. Don't try to over do it too fast. My sister did that after her surgery and she had to go back again and have a screw re-set. After it was re-set the second time she didn't do anything (rehab wise) and her knee is still a bit messed up. Find the happy median to recovery :) Ohhh and what kind of Fisher bike does your husband have? (see my signature.. I have 2) .... lol

He has a either a 2008 or 2009 Gary Fisher Wahoo. About a month ago, after coming back from Santos, he noticed the frame was broken...I think under the saddle. He took it back to the bike shop and it was covered under the warranty. Just had to pay for the labor. He thinks the new one is different and that it has carbon fiber rear forks which the old one did not. Guess we'll see how this one goes.

Three straight days of rain here in Central VA. My bike looks at me sadly each morning when I come out to the car and it's still there from the day before. I'm thinking maybe of gambling on the weather Saturday and heading up to ride some of the trails around D.C.

Other than getting warmer, looks like Saturday in the DC area should be decent (no liquid sunshine in the forecast yet). I have to get out on my new bike to make sure it and I can handle the Reston Century on Sunday.

zzOtherlandzz 08-19-10 03:53 PM

<sigh> ...... Apparently if i don't pay my bills...... electric, cable and others they will shut off my service... Soooo sadly I don't think i'm going to get a ride in today..... Just got some work in about an hour ago and It doesn't look like i'm going to be done until after its dark.

Linda N ..... I actually was close to buying Wahoo (used one) before I ended up getting the Sugar 3+ (also used).... The Wahoo was newer and more money.... and I got a good deal on the Sugar.. so went with that one ...

........ ok... back to work for now.... DOH!

abracapocus 08-20-10 09:01 PM

No ride today. I teleworked. My lovely Basil Blossom panniers came this week. Put them on the bike tonight. They really dress up the ol' mountain bike. I'll go for a ride in the morning and see how they do provided it's not raining. If the test run goes well, I might hit the farmer's market Sunday morning.

zzOtherlandzz 08-20-10 09:46 PM

Picture of the bike with the panniers?

<sigh> ..... This spring when I started riding again I bought a basket to put on the back of my mountain bike (the Tassajara) for taking packages to the post office. Did that for 5 or 6 weeks, round trip of about 6.5 to 7 miles. But then I started wanting to ride longer distances so now i've got to the point where i have NOT made the trip to the post office in a couple of months. I want to do it.... but its like I don't really feel like getting all sweaty and dirty for a 6 mile ride & then do it again later to get more miles in... I hoping that when it cools down a bit i'll do the post office ride & a second ride later in the day... That's my plan anyway....

FunkyStickman 08-21-10 05:21 AM

The weather's been nasty lately, which is fair enough... I don't have any wet weather gear on the bike as of yet. However, the local bike club is having a big shindig ride today, having the race team ride with the regulars and do paceline training, answer training questions, etc. so I was gung-ho about it until last night...

So I'm up writing on my book (yes, I'm writing a book) and my wife starts asking me questions, and before I know it, she's laying into me about riding my bike every day... she actually told me "I can't believe on the weekend, the few days you get off, you don't want to sleep in and snuggle with me! You can ride later, or do aerobics, or something, right?" Apparently she thinks riding every day is making me tired. On top of that, she's jealous that I'm getting back in shape and losing weight, when for years, she was the athletic one.

I just about lost it. But I was a good husband, and I acknowledged her feelings. Sure enough, 5:30 AM rolls around, and BAM I'm wide awake and my legs are itching to ride, because, hey, every other day I'm up at 5:30. My body doesn't know what day of the week it is, all it knows is it wants to go ride. So now I'm here crying to the BF peoples, AND missing my ride... ugh. I suck at life.

Maybe I should have just said it was raining...

zzOtherlandzz 08-21-10 07:00 AM

FunkyStickman...... Time to buy her a bike??

I have no wife...... But I know the feeling about wanting to ride... I actually feel guilty when I don't ride now. Which is a good thing for me, it's the way I used to feel way back when I used to ride all the time.

FunkyStickman 08-21-10 06:20 PM

I have 4 kids, couldn't take her riding unless we did the bike train thing with the littlest two... though I would still love to do that.

kjc9640 08-23-10 11:08 AM

Got up at 7 this morning, took my camel back out of the freezer and set it out by the bike on the porch so it could start to thaw. Ate my banana, put on my bike shorts and jersey. Turned on the computer to check the weather, it said 30% chance of rain at 10. Laid back down on the bed and didn't back up until 10. I am such a wimp. I know later today I will kick myself for doing that.
Go ahead point your finger at me and call me a wussy. I'm embarrassed but I can take it.

abracapocus 08-23-10 03:14 PM

Hey, kjc9640, I took today off to wash my hair so I'm not going to give you any crap, that's for sure. Okay, I'm not 100% serious about that, but I'm not 100% joking either. I am going to try and commute in Tue, Wed & Thu though and up it by one day a week. If I do, that'll be only 1 drive in this week.

zzOtherlandzz 08-24-10 05:58 PM

Well, I wish I could think of some funny or witty reason why I didn't ride today..... But I can't...... DOH!! Truth is I just didn't feel like it today! Kicking myself in the butt now though, feeling guilty for not riding. Especially when it was only around 83deg at the time I normally leave to go on a ride...

Lindaosm 08-24-10 07:22 PM

well, PT was here today. I asked him how long he thought it would be before I could get back on my bike. He says typically 6 weeks but he thinks i am doing better than normal. He says my knee extension is close to week 3 and it's not been two yet. Going to Doc tomorrow for x-ray and then hopefully i can start putting full weight on it. Hubby has been going out daily for rides but I've warned him about behaving on the mb trails at Santos. Last time he was there a few weeks back (before my surgery) he took a bad fall and was sore for days. Don't need both of us laid up.

LindaN

Sounds like the surgery went well, glad to hear that your recovery is going well.

Ex Pres 08-25-10 07:50 AM

Only 91F for the start of our Tuesday night ride here in B'ham last night. Brrr :)
Felt very comfortable.

kjc9640 08-25-10 08:07 AM

Reason enough not to ride. Please make it stop...

Just wondering are you going to do a bit of stationary bike riding first? Maybe a bit less stress on the knee & if you get tired or the knee doesn't feel right you can just stop and not worry about making it back to the car or home on bike.

Glad things are going good for you so far.....

yes, we belong to the gym that is associated with our local hospital. It's where I will also go for PT. Probably first a new machine called a new step. You sit in it and work the arms as well as the legs/knees with not as much bending. Then the recumbent. Hopefully after that I can get back to spinning. yes, I really want to build up my stamina before I attempt to get back on the bike for any long rides.
Thanks for asking

Lame excuse today. I packed my bike, shorts, t-shirt, socks, gloves, helmet, water bottles, and air pump into the car like I always do when riding after work. Late afternoon, I'm changed and ready to ride, and I head out to the car.

What's missing?

SHOES.

abracapocus 08-26-10 08:37 AM

A thunder storm woke me up at 4:45 this morning. From a terrible nightmare, so that was good. But when I got up for real and looked at the radar, it looked like more coming. Of course after I committed to not riding to work, it broke up and I would've been fine. Grr. At least I rode yesterday so I'm not down a ride for the week. Still I'd hoped to get in an extra one.
