Hey fordfaster:

I don't mind sharing the fact that I am legally carrying a concealed weapon on the forums, or in person to select individuals. Here in Florida, unlike a number of states that have been mentioned in this thread, concealed carry is perfectly legal. Why in the world would anyone who has a CCW license be concerned. To me, this is no different then sharing the fact that I also legally drive a car.

When lived in Oviedo FL (just to the north-east of Orlando, I have chatted and compared weapons with two local bicycle mounted police officers, One was very enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by my Glock model 30. (It's a .45cal compact). There was a comment in one of the posts regarding the absence of concealed carry on a California trail. Well, good luck getting a concealed carry permit in the Kalifornia gulags.

Yes, most of us here in the south-east have a very casual attitude toward firearms. By the way, when I am riding some of the trails out in our jungle, I usually carry a .357 magnum revolver. Why? Black bears (Florida has the largest black bear variation in the entire country) and razorback wild hogs. The hogs are always in packs, they are very dangerous and they are always pissed.

Glad OP made it through ok. Just another thought if you can't reach the stuff designed for defensive purposes. If you've got your lock handy, it might be time for kryptonite justice to the side of the head. Though I suppose that could be considered deadly force.

Yeah, those things don't need much, if any, provocation to attack. Most of our critters down here will usually take off in the other direction when they sense or hear a human. That applies to our Florida Panthers as well (by other names around the country: mountain lion, Puma, etc). But those damn razorbacks just don't care. I would not doubt that it heard you coming and made the decision to attack. Glad it did not get you. Their tusks are razor sharp.

For the record, I never carry a firearm on the internet. That would be particularly hazardous over on P&R and (*gasp*) Trollheim.

So... you're going to grab your u-lock from wherever it is secured on your bike ... strapped to a rack, or in a frame mount it came with (I hate those), or in a backpack or pannier - all things designed to hold the lock securely, with no regard on how quickly one must get the lock. And you think that's somehow faster or easier than drawing a handgun from a holster that benefits from 150 years of holster design that maximizes both retention and rapid draw.

Riiiigght.

"ARMED BICYCLE RIDER DEFENDS SELF AGAINST MULTIPLE ATTACKERS"

No Wait, The man grabbed his openly carried pistol from his holster, pointed it at the sky, and yelled “GUN!” The attackers then fled, leaving the man with only minor injuries from being knocked off his bike.

I'm beginning to think you should avoid the tennis courts, it's a surprisingly dangerous sport.

...kidding, glad you're ok!

Glad you're OK. I only ride paved trails, but will be adding an air horn to the papper spray in my cargo shorts pocket.
