Location: 1/8 mile east of Santa Barbara Blvd on Green Blvd//5:30am. Two guys around 30ish/one white-one hispanic tried to rob me. They ran out from behind a tree and did there best to rip me off the bike//fully loaded touring bike for training. More details: The reason I posted this : A. To let locals know B. To let others know my mindset right before the incident to help prepare you just in case your ever confronted with a similar situation.

Morning of 11/24/10: I was riding west on Green Blvd at at around 12mph kind of in a trance. I'm thinking my only mission is to watch out for cars. I first noticed the two guys standing on the left side of Green about 75' in front of me. I then saw them run another 20 or so feet and hide behind a tree//I have
8000 lumen worth of head lighting//It was like happening in slow motion in my mind never really putting 2&2 together that this was going to be a robbery.
Anyways, as I came even with them they ran out, one guy went right for me and the other tried to latch onto my backpack. I hit one guy in the head and knocked him down and i guess that scared them off//I'm sure the did not bargain on trying to tackle a fully loaded bike.
They ran and hid behind one of the apartment bldgs/Waverly Place. I called the police and 3 cars showed up with in 5 minutes. That's about it...
Police report//case#10-30717.

I have 2 pepper sprays, 1 bear spray, medium sized aluminum bat that were all positioned too low on the bike to get to in a hurry. I since moved them to a more handy spot.

Are you carrying your arsenal to the meetup?....Interested in how you have it all mounted. Up to this point I never carry anything but maybe need to re-think, especially when loaded for touring. See you next Sunday......

Since the Jennifer Ewing tragedy on the Silver Comet Trail in North Georgia, I make it a point of never going riding without my Ruger LCP .380 pistol in my pocket. You never know when you will meet up with someone with malicious intent. It's 9.6 oz, so it's very easy to carry.

I have it in a nylon holster and I just keep it in my center jersey pocket. I have also clipped it to the inside of my shorts, on the right side, as I'm a leftie, and it's a lot easier to cross-draw.

Once again..Thanx for the comments. It certainly has been a learning experience for me. Has anybody else been through a similar experience??

I carry a Glock G39, which is a quite a bit bigger than an LCP. I either carry it in a Tommy's Gun Pack, or a SmartCarry. Wish I'd gotten the SmartCarry Security Model; that rear pouch would be a handy place to carry ID, CCW Permit, and a Credit Card.

Note: The SmartCarry might not be the best choice if all you wear is cycling shorts and a jersey. It's meant to be worn with a layer of clothing between it and your skin (typically underwear), with another layer of clothing (shorts or pants) concealing it. But it works great if you wear lycra shorts underneath a pair of knickers or MTB shorts.

Note that I haven't tried the SmartCarry on rides more than 20 miles, or the TGP for more than 30, and that I ride mostly upright. Might not work for you if you ride on aero bars or in the drops.

I don't live in the southeast and apologize if I'm butting in but I saw the link to this thread posted over at CGOAB, saw the comments, and felt the need to put in my 2 cents worth. I understand that states are very different with respect to gun laws and public attitudes towards firearms and I'm fine with that, but when I first saw the quote cited above, I thought it was a joke. Then I read on and realized that, based on the subsequent comments, it seems to be a perfectly acceptable practice in this region of the country for cyclists to carry loaded firearms. I'm not making a judgment saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, but what it shows me is how very, very different the attitudes can be in different parts of the country. Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I've never heard of any cyclists in my area (Northern California) who carry loaded guns when riding.

No problem about butting in, its still a free internet, for now at least. Since that Jennifer Ewing incident, most of the people that use the trail, especially in the more isolated sections carry some form of protection.

I would like to know where pointyhead gets this statistic. Has there been a survey, a poll? I don't think so. Since most "forms of protection" are carried concealed it would be hard to judge without a survey.

In most states you do. What I find screwy is the fact that anyone would admit to carrying a firearm on the internet.. It's so easy to use that information in court even if they are getting framed for a crime they didn't commit... it's easy for someone to say: " but so-and-so admitted to carrying this exact model firearm on the internet, here is the proof" = GUILTY AS CHARGED.

I have one. Crime is higher in the Southeast. The FBI can back up that statement.
