You'll probably do a lot better to look to your local rando club for training for that specific event. Seeing as how anyone in your area that is interested in PBP is also bound to be involved in the club. Whereas on bikeforums.net, maybe 1/50 of the local riders will be on here, so your odds are not good.

JReade- PBP is a 1200k randonneuring event in France, held every three years, and coming up in August of 2011.

Hey, France. I am in the CFL randos, but I live by the Space Center.

Did you ride the series this year? Your odds of getting in are much better if you got some long rides in 2010.

What is your brevet experience? What is your plan on how to ride? I am a slow plodder who does not like to waste time at the stops. I find few riders who go this way. A group or a pair is a trade-off, and only works well if you have similar styles and abilities. On the second or third day, it matters less, especially near the back of the pack, as everyone is slower and tired, and it helps to have someone to talk to, or trade pulls in the wind. At that point, I often fall into a group.

If you have any questions about the series rides, the club or training, fire away. You should try the long distance forum, too.

No Brevet experience. What kind of pace do you ride? Have you been to Paris? I won't have my bike ready till Feb..Can you give me a break down on the series.
Do you know anybody in the Naples area? Thanx,Glenn

I go 14-15 mph, which usually sees me dropped early on. But, because I hate to linger at the stops, I often pass and re-pass the same riders many times. I have not been to PBP yet, but I did finish a SR series last year, and 200, 300, 400, and 1000 this year.

I don't know anyone from the other side of the state. Try the contact link on the group website to contact Tim, the RBA.

You must ride the entire series to qualify for PBP. That includes the 200k one week from Saturday. Do you have an alternate bike for the 200k? If you don't think you could go out and ride a century tomorrow, then you may be getting in too late. If you could, then you should be o.k. You can use each ride in the series as training for the next.

The 200k in Jupiter is flat and easy. It's a beautiful ride, if the weather is right. Last year was very cold, and a repeat seems possible. The 300k is also flat, and poses few challenges. The biggest difficulty on either is wind, which can be very harsh along the coast. 15 mph is not at all uncommon over here (the 300k is in my back yard). If you are not used to it, that can really wear you down. Practice in the drops is helpful. Could you stay in the drops for 5 or 10 hours? You can use aero bars here, but not in Paris, so you might as well get used to the drops.

The 400 and 600 both have more hills, rough roads, and time spent in traffic. Wind tends to be a minor factor on these rides (though you never know). There are long stretches without any civilization, which is both good and bad. They both pass through the Sugarloaf Mountain area, which has some of the steepest climbs in our very flat state. Of course, unless you are super fast, you'll need to do some night riding.

Despite the wind and some hills, I'd say ours is one of the easiest series out there. I wouldn't expect that finishing the series here would make you a slam-dunk to get to the finish on time in Paris.

Extra time spent climbing, sprinting, or pushing against the wind would be advised. I found I was better prepared for my second series with more short, but faster (or at least higher effort) rides. I spent the first year on epic slow training rides, which made me a slow rider, meaning the brevets required near full effort. By training harder this year (even though my training rides were shorter), I was able to go more comfortably, at less than full effort on the big rides.

Bike choice is not critical, as long as it is comfy and fits you well. You may want some low gears for Paris, though. Nutrition is critical on any long ride. If you are not up to speed on that, learn now, or suffer (or fail) later.

For more, better info, check out RUSA's site, or The Complete Book of Long Distance Cycling. Hammer Nutrition has some good info on their site, too. Cheers, Brian

That will qualify you. However, they plan to limit the entries to 5,000, based on a complicated formula. The bottom line is if too many qualified folks from the U.S. want to go, then they will give sign-up preference to people with the longest rides in 2010, up to 1000k. I'd focus on your series and not worry about it. You'll likely be able to go to Paris if you make the series, but the series has its own merit, anyway.

    Hey, Glenn

Are you doing the 200 at the Indian reservation? I met the organizer, John, at the 300 this weekend. Are you still trying to complete the series and go to Paris? Good luck if you go.
